retiring, resurrecting, representing, remembering ... revenge!

Last Week in Pop Culture 002, 4rd Week of September 2018

1. Pop culture September obituary
Since it is the end of the month, let me know look back and pay tribute to those that have passed that may have touched someone reading this throughout their careers. I use the above page for reference and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future since they would update it as frequent as they could.

Please visit the page for a little more information on their passing since I do not want to copy and paste everything here. left - Malcolm James McCormick @ Mac Miller, aged 26. {January 19th, 1992 - September 7th, 2018} (rapper, singer & record producer) middle - Burton Leon Reynolds Jr. @ Burt Reynolds, aged 82. {February 11th, 1936 - September 6th, 2018} (actor, director & producer) right - Alexander Basil Matthews @ Al Matthews, aged 75. {November 21st, 1942 - September 22nd, 2018} (Spanish actor & singer)

Birds of Prey have casted Mary Elizabeth Winstead for its Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell for its Black Canary. I especially love the former for her roles in cult classic Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and the more recent 10 Cloverfield Lane while the latter is an unknown quantity to me, with her most recent role in WGN American's Underground. I can rely on Mary to be a capable action star and I am glad they are giving the opportunity for newer (less known) talent to thrive by grabbing the bull by its horns. There will always be a vocal few who would hate this casting since it's "not being faithful to the original materials" but with Zazie Beetz being the standout in Deadpool 2 as the Domino, I think I made my point here. They don't have to have all-female production crew in Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) as the director and Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) as the writer but the effort should be praised for giving these talents a platform to work on. A February 2020 release date is set and with the Joker origin film still shooting, they might begin pre-production for this project right after. Oh, there won't be Batgirl but Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn, hence the rumour of the title changing in the future.

3. Bowsette
Yeah ... since I didn't include her before, here she is to conclude this month. The above tweet is said to be the origin and please refer to the article for an in-depth dive.

4. Bumblebee's second trailer
"Bumblebee, there is only one way to end this war: you must protect Earth and its people."
My faith in Travis Knight to effectively transition from stopmotion animation to live action has been duly justified with every coming trailer of this spinoff/soft reboot, as we see an effective scaling down of the Transformers Universe and focusing on the relationship between the Autobots and the human companion. Trying to stay true to the original animated series, the faithful recreation of the G1 Transformers' classic designs and colours just gives me much more reason to be really positive on this most recent iteration. I hope we can see much more of Cybertron (I think it would mainly be in the opening ten minutes or so ...) but most of all I hope this would be the much needed turn for the better for the franchise.

What do you think? Are you as optimistic as I am? Knowing Travis Knight after watching all those LAIKA films, I am holding him in high regards personally.

5. Creed II's second trailer
"If you want to fight this man, that’s your business. But don’t pretend this is about your father."
After the successful spinoff Creed by Ryan Coogler, I am looking forward to see where they'll go by going through the Rocky's backstory and peeling off the layers with the son of Adonis Creed stepping into the ring with the son of Ivan Drago that killed his father. The journey to reach that decision is enough to span the first and second act and the payoff is the eventual bout fueled by vengeance and history. Giving the helm to Steven Caple Jr. of 2016's the Land might be the main variable here, but I am still positive this will carry the torch forward really well. Do you think otherwise?

6. Daredevil Season Three NYCC poster
I had to include this beautiful Paolo Rivera poster for the upcoming NYCC as the countdown for Daredevil Season Three ticking down ... seventeen days left!
-----
7. X-Men: Dark Phoenix's first official trailer
As a final hurrah for Fox's X-Men Universe, this first look of the second attempt for the Phoenix Saga is quite a solid teaser for this directorial debut for Simon Kinberg, at least looking better than the Last Stand. They might go into space at the tailend of the third act as we see the Mutants divided yet again but maybe for the last time and I am always eager to give them a chance to prove themselves rather than just right away judge the whole film based on just the trailer and stills. With that being said, this trend of Fox pushing back their movies to have major reshoots (Josh Boone's the New Mutants is the other casualty) does not make them look like a capable studio on paper.
And then ... they moved it back yet again to June 7th this time around, giving us the news just a day after the trailer debuted ...

I'm glad Alita: Battle Angel will be better positioned in that February dateslot but I don't know what to think of Gambit's neverending pursuit akin to the Crow reboot. And that rumoured PG-13 cut of Deadpool for the Holidays. Okay ...?
------
This is the more random one I'm including just for the sake of a helpful informational insight into current society and how much have changed or more specifically the perception of the younger generation, being more practical than just purely romantic.

9. 25 years old friendship between a man and a fish (No, not in the Shape of Water way, you perv)
Since imgur is full with unconventional relationship between animals, here is one to break the mold with a Japanese scuba diver strike a friendship with an Asian sheepshead wrasse by giving it a little TLC out of kindness and it reciprocated by being by his side virtually every day he goes down to visit the shrine. Ah, such a beautiful bond ... do watch the video to have your heart warmed even for just a little bit.
--------
10. Philadelphia Flyers' new mascot, Gritty
Yeah, I have to include him in here. That team know what they are doing with this mascot when they design him ...
---------
11. First official look of Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers
Well, isn't this just the perfect thing you've seen all last month? The Mister Rogers biopic will be directed by Marielle Heller that directed 2015's the Diary of a Teenage Girl for next year's October 18th release date. Since it is a year away, I want to know if you have to choose any celebrity or personality to have their own television show just like Mister Rogers, who would you choose? I personally vouch for Terry Crews just purely out of his positive attitudes toward anything.

"I don't think I quit. I think I feel that, as I walk away from a game that no longer serves me mentally, physically, and emotionally. That's what I would tell people who say I quit. Most people don't know who I am as a person or what I've been through to achieve the success I have."

That was a first, huh? If you've read the article above (or just the above quote), you can understand his reasoning behind his shocking action. If you do not have the same passion for the sport as you did before when you first started it, all the power to him to be brave enough to take matters into his own hands and do something about it. What do you think of his decision?
-----------
13. First look of Taron Egerton as Elton John for Rocketman (May 31st, 2019)
When you've watched the teaser below, you know they'll leaning hard on making this biopic a bit more "fantastical musical" retelling of the famed musician's early life and rise through the music industry. After seeing him showing off his charisma in Kingsman and his singing prowess in Illumination Pictures' Sing, I have no doubt in him being able to pull this off. Just look at that teaser, guys!

------------
14. Leaked gameplay of now scrapped Netflix/Telltale Games' Stranger Things game
When you've seen some of leaked gameplay of the planned Telltale Games' adaptation of Stranger Things, (I uploaded them below, do hover over them if you want to see Will and her mom), you can see how close they were to a finished product here. Netflix might use what has been made so far (if it's viable in their agreement) and have another game studio to finish it off. This world might interesting to play in.
-------------
15. First official poster for Amazon's the Boys live action series
With comics are now being adapted more and more by dozens of streaming platforms out there, the diversity has been on the rise lately and this particular comic franchise will be unique, which is an understatement.
