"We have to protect them."

a Quite Place
Mini Review

[PG-13, 2hr 20min, Action, Adventure, Nostalgia, Pop culture, Science Fiction]
Knowing nothing when watching the debut trailer of the film, I was instantly hooked with the premise and how well it was executed in that small snippet. Imagine my surprise when I see the ever excellent Emily Blunt in her first horror film leading it alongside her real life husband John Krasinski, playing a couple onscreen for the first time. Learning more of the project, I am more intrigued with the prospect of the husband directing the film as his second directorial effort after the solid the Hollars, as last year's Jordan Peele's Get Out provides a strong precedence for a comedic actor being a terrific horror director. After seeing it myself last Thursday, the streak continues!
The premise is quite simple yet only used for a solid foundation for the storytelling to strive on, whereby there is a comet crashes down on Earth but there is an extraterrestrial aliens on board that start to terrorize the whole world without having any weakness for human to counterattack them with. Wanting to survive in this suddenly void world that turns lethally hostile, this one family among other survivors in the vicinity has conjure up a working safe plan that they have adhere to successfully in keeping themselves alive. Sound is the one key plot point that the story revolves around, as its absence would not let the creatures know of their location and all the precautions and steps they take to muffle any sound they make are what have keep them walking around, that is until a certain set of incidents putting all of that in jeopardy.
Who are we if we can’t protect them? We have to protect them. Promise me.
Let me reiterate: silence is key, in the movie as well as in real life! The directing lets you know the tone it is going for right away from the first scene, grabbing your attention with the lack of sound and the amplification of the deafening silence and surprised introduction of sound and score for the 'jump-scare' equivalent. Thankfully my screening is quiet throughout as they understand how to watch this silent thriller but I don't think that a bit rowdy theater would be conducive in this particular viewing experience, so please make sure you watch it with an ideal crowd and screening time. The editing really plays a big part in executing this concept and I can safely say that Krasinski is a capable director behind the lens as the tension keeps building up time and time again with payoff after payoff making it such an enjoyable rollercoaster ride!

P.S. Please keep in mind that this is more of a family thriller rather than horror although there are a lot of elements of the latter!
