I am never a comic book reader myself and the first time I knew of Iron Man was from the first trailer from Marvel Studios, introducing the unsuspecting audience to a man in an flying iron armour that would kickstart the modern golden age of superhero movies. Back then, this was such a gamble in making a hugh budget comic book adaptation of an obscure character and having the director Jon Favreau in backing up a once-troubled and recovering actor Robert Downey Jr. to lead the project. It turned out that the film itself would be as compelling as it was without the charisma and vulnerability that he exuded on camera while screenplay making the storytelling a bit more grounded and as personal as possible as we saw the transformation of an arrogant billionaire that got caught in the webs of his own makings and had to get back down to basic and use that brilliant mind of his to get out of that predicament. Finally safe back in the USA, Tony Stark had the helpful Pepper Potts always by his side in helping this changed man in creating his own set of high tech armours and in turns facing the personal backstabbing threat of a family friend played by the one and only Jeff Bridges, giving us a finale that would be repeated in the years to come of CGI fest between two CG characters that nonetheless still holds up until today in my honest opinion. This trend of origin film with similar beats would be the measuring stick for the following efforts that would want to follow on its successful footsteps. The studio would never imagine what this would start and that famous post credit scene with Nick Fury talking about the Avenger Initiative was put in there as just a guffaw and not a promise for an eventual ensemble film down the line. After the reception they receive in the box office and critically, they thought that they might have something in their hands here and Kevin Feige was on board to steer the boat to success ... !
