Mary Poppins Returns
DISNEY
[December 25th, 2018]
Trailer(s) Effectiveness = 90% for showing the drab and colourless world before the arrival of the magical nanny like a silver lining coming through the dark clouds.
Being much more aware of the pop culture lexicons in the later years of my life, I only know Mary Poppins by name and its "Super-..." song, being the epitome of the Disney brand of happiness over gloom. Having watched it for the first time just last year, I finally get what all the buzz is about! The wonderful performances by the lead, Julie Andrews, and supporting musical prowess of Dick Van Dyke add to the charming and entertaining songs and score with the family values at the forefront as a wholesome family film! I do get that the whimsical and 'sugary' nature of the premise might be too sweet and innocent to some i.e. Collider Movie Talk's Mark Ellis and my close friend, Gabriel, to name a heartless few as the signature Disney hand-drawn sequences could be the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak. It holds such an endearing spot as one of Disney's live action classic which is why when the news of a modern reboot-slash-sequel came out in the wake of the studio's recent trend of revisiting their established intellectual properties, people voiced their wariness and pessimism of them living up to the cherished original but when I learned that Emily Blunt would the playing the titled protagonist, I am instantly relieved of any worry and has been looking forward to see her filling in the shoes without a hitch with her own charms and charisma, keeping the longstanding fans happy with the apparent seamless transition from the old to the new, if I may be a bit crass. Coupled with the ever talented Lin Manuel Miranda, I don't have any doubt that the music and score would be at the least excellent!
Chance of Success = 85% with the talents of Blunt and Miranda leading the charge
to revisit a magical world yet again.
to revisit a magical world yet again.
a case for the magical journey with the nanny and chimney sweeper:
+ Highlights +
Such a charming magical musically-inclined journey for the two children with the strict yet fun nanny and optimist chimney sweeper as well as their no-fun father, culminating in a wholesome familial learning experience for everyone involved. The songs are unforgettable though!
? Main contention ?
Having being based just over the pond in the 19th century, the setting is unique in and of itself with the chimney sweepers and yes the rather by-the-book nannies ... it's the Disney twists that make the journey that much more exciting.
- Lowlights -
The tireless positive tone and over abundance of optimism could be too much for some who aren't ready to ingest so much sugary goodness, not having the right mindset in the first place.

a case for the promising modern reboot-slash-sequel:
+ Highlights +
Such a perfect casting of Emily Blunt with Lin Manuel Miranda that would provide the charms and talents to at least live up to the original, or even finding their own unique voices that would add to the world instead of retreading familiar grounds.
~
Rob Marshall is an experienced director that has played well in the musical sub-genre with Chicago and Into the Woods, providing deft hands to handle such a delicate projects.
? Main contention ?
With the advancement of technology and photography techniques, I can't wait to see what direction they would go with the artistic direction as well as musical direction, whether to pay homage to the original's hand-drawn sequences for example or just creating something new from scratch.
- Lowlights -
I can't fault some to find some similarities between this teaser trailer with another trailer of last year's adaptation of Stephen King's It, with the initial ominous shots and the eventual reveal of the titled protagonist/antagonist. As I've stated before, it even looks familiar with Christopher Robin's!
