Wrestling is such a unique entity of its own and have its own criteria and traits that the 'professional wrestling' twist has been going strong for decades now from the 80's even until now with WWE leading the industry as the prime example of how to execute them to perfection (or at least try to). The theatricality of it all just gets me when I was a child when I didn't know any better and even until now when the magic was gone (I know, I know it's fake ... so what. They accept it now) but I still enjoy it by learning the ins and outs of the business and enjoying the personalities as well as their athletic performances in the ring.
When I came across the Movie Trivia Schmoedown, I was intrigued by the concept of people putting their pop culture knowledge on the line (more specifically movies) and fight for supremacy against others by answering trivia questions for a number of rounds until one's points is over another and declared the victor. Its presentation that would be familiar to the wrestling fans in me certainly gives this series a certain glamorized theatricality that I definitely appreciate, giving the fight a grand platform to fight on. I know that now wrestling is choreographed but it shouldn't discount the fact that all the moves have to be done by athletic performers and be done safely to avoid grievous injury. The one thing that differentiate it with this movie trivia equivalent is that their knowledge is real and they had to rely on them to answer the questions given, going through the wide spectrum of the silver screen industry and this specific element of randomness gives it an element of surprise that gives it that extra edge.
I applaud Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis for coming up with this concept and ran with it until it turns into the monster it is now and this most recent iteration took inspiration from the WWE Royal Rumble concept whereby thirty wrestlers would come into the ring one by one and try to eliminate each other by throwing them over the top rope until one remains and be its winner and earn him or herself the opportunity to fight for the top titles. Since there was nowhere they are putting their own wrestling match, they are using the weekly matches as the main template and go from there, having five competitors in each round and answer five questions and the competitor(s) who had the lowest point would be eliminated and would be replaced by another until all fifty are out. They did the final round by eliminating the final five until the last one but they cut it short for this year but the whole thing was a tremendous watch nevertheless! Since it is based on each competitor's real world knowledge, the result is never certain with some fan favourites were eliminated quickly while newcomers and mainstays stayed rounds after rounds answering questions, some barely survived while others keep leading the tally. It was a tense watch and if you are as in love with movies and wrestling as I do, you can't ask for anything more! They even have announcers (Kristian is the top one for me) and entrances for each competitor and of course live studio audiences! I can't wait the next one. Thanks, Schmoes Know for the free funny!
P.S. I love that they even did a classic switcharoo just how Elias did with the Undertaker in the last minutes, certainly giving me layer after layer of joy from that stunt!
