I think this is going to be weekly and stay as such until I pick the paces on the other shows. Until then, here they are:
Altered Carbon s01e03 [Netflix]
This has been such an intriguing world to see it through the main protagonist's eyes as being forcefully brought to life against his own wishes to serve someone that he had fought for in his former life comes understandably with its own complications as he is forced to play ball while his past is coming back to haunt him. Being a man out of time didn't do him much good but his skills in this new body is a lethal combination. I'm being a bit more obscure than usual since it plays like a normal detective series but the details are best to be watched in its entirety. Let's just say that where he is at the end of the episode would not do him any favour at all.
GLOW s01e01-02 [Netflix]
Professional wrestling was not the beast that it is now and they were more free to venture out on their own and create their own promotion, hence the creation of an all-female show called Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling or GLOW for short. Even though they are not actually following the real life story of its creation, the decision to focus on one main protagonist going into this foreign world of theatrical wrestling is a smart one indeed as she serves as the surrogate of the viewers who are actually new to the genre, introducing the concept itself piece by piece to ease the newcomers in the show as well as in real life into this bizarre world. It's all about performing an act in the ring safely and believably in the context of the storyline as the performers would have to cooperate with each other to execute the plan to a tee. We saw how there are two roles opposing each other in Episode Two and they have to play their own specific roles in that rather distasteful miscarriage act (just consider the time, okay?) and I'm not sure whether it's all about the entertainment or the wrestling in the original product but I can get behind this movie angle with the director directing how they would act inside the ropes. I can't wait to see more!
WWE Smackdown 050818 [WWE]
I think this is where the weekly review of WWE should be, as a valid medium for my passion for the art while padding this section with shows that I actually watched (aside from the superhero shows of course)! With that being said, we pushed forward after the lackluster Backlash (being closed to the Greatest Royal Rumble certainly didn't help!), as Money in the Bank is the company's second attempt to have a proper joint PPV with the wrestlers fighting for something tangible which heighten the stake and make the matches that much more exciting. Even more so when we are dwindling them down to arguably the top of the crop between the two brands. It certainly helped with the available roster at their helm as Jeff Hardy and the Mizz had an entertaining action-filled back and forth 17 minutes between two experienced veterans, with a shocking ending I had to admit. The ten count for the no disqualification match for the WWE Championship was perplexing at best and it's smart to push it away for a week at least as a breather. I don't mind the trend of selfie-promotions and I hope it won't be too cliche in the end. It's unfortunate Iconics had to take a pin again, specifically Peyton Royce but it was used to put Charlotte over as she tried to find another way to fight for the title. I'm just hoping that Cesaro and maybe one of the New Day members would get a proper push down the line (Big E? ), especially the Swede instead of just these meaningless feud that still entertains the crowd. It's a different road Becky Lynch is going down in as another defeat suffered by Mandy Rose this time around would affect her self-esteemand I hope she is getting an interesting storyline in store for her since she was out of the limelight for awhile now (a heel turn?). Daniel Bryan was not slowing down anytime soon as he grabbed this new lease in life with both hands and ran with it, giving another strong performance against the Bulgarian Brute Rusev (at least Aiden English is still with him ... don't separate them, please!) and it was unfortunate that one had to go over another since they are the most over wrestlers in the company currently. Is Rusev finally getting his main push? I definitely hope so! Even though Daniel Bryan wouldn't get to be the briefcase holder once again at least for this year, would he finally get the opportunity to fight for the title before the calendar ends?
P.S. I love the out of focus effect for Mandy Rose' entrance as they are trying to properly package her as the combination of Trish Stratus and ... Goldust?
