"It's a good thing you've come along when you did, Mary Poppins."
Mary Poppins Returns
DISNEY
[December 19th, 2018]
Trailer(s) Effectiveness = 95% for bringing the magic back to life again with throwback to the classic as well as with Emily Blunt shines as the titular character.
She is back! "I'm Mary Poppins, y'all!"
A different dynamic this time around as the parents know what exactly Nanny Poppins is capable of.
Having the kids being his with the sister living together with them (with the impending threat of them losing their house) this time around, I'm looking forward to see the different dynamic at play.
Love that dig of her not aging at all, a nice way of the movie acknowledging the change of casting.
Of course she pays attention to what the children are saying, she is there for the children ... oh, his' as well. There will be songs aplenty but I'm not sure whether they will all be new or maybe a couple of throwbacks. She sound lovely even with just a couple of bars!
YES, handrawn animations are back, baby! It is one of the most endearing parts of the original and I really appreciate them paying tribute to them faithfully instead of relying purely on CGI!
Yup, Dick Van Dyne is dancing again in another Mary Poppins film! A nice proper cameo with him playing the old grizzled bank owner this time around (presumably). We know Julie Andrews is back (presumably) as well but we haven't seen her in any of the promotional materials as of yet. Would they keep it as a surprise until the end?
A lot of interesting visuals they come out with and this in particular would be out of this world!

Finally a full trailer for one of my most anticipated sequel by Disney! If I haven't already made myself perfectly clear in my previous teaser review (link below), I watched the original just a couple of years ago and got hooked instantly as it lives up to my expectations after being brought up it is perceived in the pop culture lexicon. Julie Andrews plays a pivotal role in leading the film for me with her charms and vulnerabilities as the titular character, and after seeing the first trailer myself, my confidence on Emily Blunt being able to live up to her portrayal purely basing on her previous movie performances and the aforementioned teaser is now justified and even increase tenfold after what I saw in the trailer! I've acknowledged of the understandable criticism of it being just another Beauty and the Beast, a modern retread of the established classic by going through the same beat without adding anything new. Based on what is shown to us, the same beats can be seen that are similar to the original but with new modern twists to them from the kids being mesmerized by her abilities at first to how they go to the magical land for example. Being a sequel instead of just another live action adaptation put Mary Poppins Returns in a unique predicament whereby Disney for the first time needs to find that perfect balance between paying tribute to the beloved classic and venture out on their own and invent something new with essentially the same premise. When I watch the trailer though, it feels like we never left the magical world of the magical nanny in the first place as Emily Blunt showcasing her charms right away when she interacts with the Banks kids that are all grown up to the very first note she hits when she is singing to the children. The magical journey is something I will look forward the most especially when they bring back the penguins and all the hand-drawn antics! Brings back beautiful memories! I know that I will watch the film no matter what but this just makes the waiting all the more excruciating! Just three months left to go!
Chance of Success = 95% with effective attempt at a sequel and a return to feelgood family film for the holidays.

a case for the magical journey with the nanny and chimney sweeper:
+ Highlights +
Such a charming magical musically-inclined journey for the two children with the strict yet fun nanny and optimist chimney sweeper as well as their no-fun father, culminating in a wholesome familial learning experience for everyone involved. The songs are unforgettable though!
? Main contention ?
Having being based just over the pond in the 19th century, the setting is unique in and of itself with the chimney sweepers and yes the rather by-the-book nannies ... it's the Disney twists that make the journey that much more exciting.
- Lowlights -
The tireless positive tone and over abundance of optimism could be too much for some who aren't ready to ingest so much sugary goodness, not having the right mindset in the first place.

a case for the promising modern reboot-slash-sequel:
+ Highlights +
Such a perfect casting of Emily Blunt with Lin Manuel Miranda that would provide the charms and talents to at least live up to the original, or even finding their own unique voices that would add to the world instead of retreading familiar grounds.
~
Rob Marshall is an experienced director that has played well in the musical sub-genre with Chicago and Into the Woods, providing deft hands to handle such a delicate projects.
? Main contention ?
With the advancement of technology and photography techniques, I can't wait to see what direction they would go with the artistic direction as well as musical direction, whether to pay homage to the original's hand-drawn sequences for example or just creating something new from scratch.
- Lowlights -
I can't fault some to find some similarities between this teaser trailer with another trailer of last year's adaptation of Stephen King's It, with the initial ominous shots and the eventual reveal of the titled protagonist/antagonist. As I've stated before, it even looks similar with Christopher Robin's!

a case for the spellbinding first trailer:
+ Highlights +
it's like we never left ...
? Main contention ?
the new incarnation would bring with it something old back and something new as well ...
- Lowlights -
trying to mess with the classic would always be seen by the detractors. You can't satisfy everyone!
