"I just want a simple life, hold on a job, make some friends ... yeah, pay my bills."

Trailer Review 059 & Movie Preview 010
Ocean's 8
Warner Bros.
[June 08th, 2018]

Trailer Effectiveness = 80% for introducing the premise and the wonderful cast.

While you may think this is simply a studio mining a popular brand for new content, Ross is actually a good friend of Soderbergh’s (Soderbergh shot second-unit on The Hunger Games) and hatched the idea for Ocean’s 8 alongside the Ocean’s 11director, with Soderbergh also serving as a producer on this film. The idea is to jump-start a new franchise with a fresh cast, this time made up of great actresses, and so far it sounds delightful. ~ Collider.com

Chance of Success
70% with the potentially fun outing with Ghostbusters-level backlash pending.
a case for the fun ensemble heist trilogy:
+ Highlights +
A solid series by Steven Soderbergh with skillful handling of a number of established and world class actors at the time, effectively using each of them in variety of entertaining roles and scenarios and also popularizing the heist genre yet again with adept storytelling and creating much needed tension to let us in their journey to finish the works.
? Main contention ?
Going bigger for the sequel does not always mean better and the director have found variety of success from his endeavors.
- Lowlights -
The premise could only go so far that it could become repetitive and in turns monotonous and how much this new take could invent itself and separate from the shadow of Steven's works is still remains to be seen ...
-
a case for the controversial soft all-female reboot:
+ Highlights +
Perfect introductory trailer by introducing the basic storyline and the eclectic cast, teasing the dynamic between them and during missions, harking back to the original's ...
? Main contention ?
Being tangentially tied to the originals with the new main protagonist being related to the old one (that line in the trailer, "is it genetic, or the whole family's like this?"), how much the new entry would give callback to the predecessors and pay homage to, and how much would they willing to deviate and invent themselves away from the proven formulas?
~
It would be optimistic to predict Gary Ross's soft reboot could live up to Soderbergh level or set himself apart as a director ... but having all the cards on the deck, this project is set up for success, hopefully.
~
Giving some of the characters a little bit more background stories and reasons to motivate them enough to join in this risky heist plan, giving them a little more dimensions hence being much more relatable to the audiences.
- Lowlights -
Fighting an uphill battle, the already toxic backlash is reminiscent of last year's against Ghostbusters and whether or not it would be justified, only time will tell ... so just, like, calm down, okay? It is unfortunately the trend Hollywood want to follow that sometimes being done just for the sake of it, trying to cash in and appeal to female demography to the detriment of the movie's storytelling itself. The premise itself makes sense though and it looks good so far, so I don't mind the reboot at all. I don't think revisiting the premise with the opposite sex warrant such a massive backlash already. If it adds to the movement for women, all the more power to them! Watch it for yourself first and then judge it, don't prematurely demean the project just from hearing the idea.
