"I've got a bad feeling about this."

Picture Review 001 & Movie Preview 012
SOLO
A STAR WARS STORY
a Han Solo Spinoff solo story on his early years
[May 25th, 2018]
First Look(?) Impression =
It's a stylish take on pre-existing loved characters and an unknown in Emilia Clarke.

an unofficial first look of the spinoff in turmoil:
+ Highlights +
It has a bold prominent orange tint going over the image (for better or for worse), as the cloud imagery signalling for an adventure primarily taking place in the sky while the wardrobe and looks teasing a Star Wars story that would be nothing like before ... I don't know, man. I'm just rambling right now, I just like the picture as it is. Criticize it if you want, the real first look might look entirely different.
? Main contention ?
After the most divisive reception by the audience since the most recent restart with huge disparity between the critics and casual moviegoers and the diehard fans on Episode VIII: the Last Jedi, the clashing of opinions resulted in a toxic atmosphere that would be deadly for any major news the studio could release ... hence why they decided to let it runs its course first before turning their attention to the second spinoff, especially since Rian Johnson's followup is still in theaters.
~
Of course the younger Han Solo and Lando Calrissian would not look too identical to their most famous looks in the original trilogy as new wardrobes and of course hair are part of the liberties taken to have a fresh new look and perspective on the icons before they came to be what we are so fond of in the first place. Most importantly, their looks should fit the actors so as to make them appear natural, not just characters cosplaying as them.
~
Oh, that Millenium Falcon looks significantly different than how it looks in the hands of Han Solo, surely foreshadowing the origin of the ship, how the scoundrel won it from Lando (if I'm not mistaken ... if I do, please enlighten me) and definitely change up its structure for the better (or worse?) and add some 'modifications'.
~
Another intriguing element here is the still unnamed character played by Emilia Clarke and since she got such a prominent place in the poster (that is if this is legit) besides the original characters, she might have a significant role in this retelling of Han Solo's earlier endeavours. Not much can be said still, but only time will tell.
- Lowlights -
As time is running out with the premiere date fast approaching, it is quite unprecedented for any major motion picture to not release any promotional material and with less than six months to spare, traditionally we should already have viewed the first introductory trailer but again it is understandable that they were doing their best under these unfortunate circumstances as the replacement director Ron Howard already did his due diligence with plenty of onset nondescript pictures and announcement of the official title of the film. They can only do so much with the massive reshoots and change of direction of the whole storytelling that having the perfect trailer that would depict would take some time to achieve that (and with previous trailers released by Lucasfilm to live up to, they better use the time to do so). With critical outlook on the whole franchise at all time high now, they need to tread carefully and only release an official marketing material that they deemed as perfect as they could come up with.

Chance of Success =
Under 70% after the aftermath of the Last Jedi and the negative connotation surrounding the project.

< x-post from the previous post >

a case for one hell of a production:
+ Highlights +
Hm ... maybe since they view the titled protagonist in such high regards, anything short out of perfect in their eyes just won't do. Let's hope what they come out with Ron Howard would be as solid as Rogue One ... here's hoping.
? Main contention ?
The directorial duo's improv-heavy approach when directing (heavily apparent in 21 Jump Street franchise) clashed with Lucasfilm's more rigid and safe storytelling style,
~
the script written by Lawrence Kasdan of Episode V and VI fame would be less malleable to on-the-spot impromptu dialogue changes and scenes since it's written according to the original screenwriter,
~
by bringing a trusted family friend into the fold in Ron Howard to handle the reshoots, it would be interesting to see how much of Lord and Miller's original scenes would be kept and how much would be totally reshot by him ... Gareth Edwards, the director of Rogue One actually played ball when his movie would be extensively reshot as well by another director, Tony Gilroy, to a positive result.
- Lowlights -
Their approach tend to lean more towards comedy instead of sarcastic commentary that's viewed to be straying too far from the original portrayal by Harrison Ford in the original trilogy as well as Episode VII ... reportedly delivering his lines like a comedian instead of with dryness and worn down attitude,
~
with just over three weeks left, they are terminated from their position because of their insistence to keep to their original vision and would not allow it to be tempered ... they were ready to edit the whole movie with the scenes already shot but when put them together in order of sequence, the overall tone appeared to be too inconsistent courtesy of the improvised nature of them and when the producer and screenwriter wanted to keep to the original script, the directors stuck to their guns and wanted to keep as much of that particular scenes as possible hence the forceful termination,
~
this is the second time an Anthology film ran into problem when the principal photography was basically done and while Rogue One was the case of the director embracing the reshoot, Han Solo would be the director doing the opposite and it's still up in the air whether or not it would yield a cohesive and strong product,
~
this particular incident could be viewed as adding something new and different to the established universe proved to be too stark in the end or Lucasfilm is just afraid to change up their tried and true formula with innovative approach and unique perspective on the characters ... although playing with fan-favourite characters such as the revered Han Solo and Lando Calrissian is entirely differently than starting from scratch for Rogue One.
