THE NEW MUTANTS
FOX
around 75% for the effective horror spin although leaning too much on horror tropes without any spotlight on the fact that they are mutants.
a case for the fresh new horror spin on the mutant teens:
+ Highlights +
Being encouraged by the surprising success of the comedic and noir interpretation of superhero/X-Men movies, 20th Century Fox is now willing to let loose and not follow tried and true formula time and time again, willing to let the directors have their own spin,
~
after years of the same formula for the superhero movies but in X-Men universe specifically, they could only go so far until they eventually allow some risk-taking by Ryan Reynolds and Tim Miller for Deadpool and then Hugh Jackman and James Mangold, adding much needed variety and since both films were being received spectacularly well, it is a bright green light for Fox to march on,
~
after dark comedy and 'noir Western' surprisingly fit like a glove in this mutant universe, the possibility of the genre of horror being executed as well is both a scary and exciting future to behold.
? Main contention ?
If this calculated risk proved fruitful at the end of the day, there is no end for the possibilities of other genres and subgenres to be infused into the second most recognized universe after Marvel's.
- Lowlights -
Since the genre has been going on for years even since the start of the medium, there is a wide berth of movies to take inspirations from, running the chance of playing more into the horror staples instead of using the mutant premise as the base without being overshadowed.

“We brought it to Fox as a trilogy of films, really all based on that long run by [Bill] Sienkiewicz, and kind of incorporates some stuff from later issues in the ’80s. These are all going to be horror movies, and they’re all be their own distinct kind of horror movies. This is certainly the ‘rubber-reality’ supernatural horror movie. The next one will be a completely different kind of horror movie. Our take was just go examine the horror genre through comic book movies and make each one its own distinct sort of horror film. Drawing from the big events that we love in the comics.” Josh Boone
a case for the trope-filled typical trailer:
+ Highlights +
After the misfire of Apocalypse in the wake of Deadpool success, the masterstroke of Logan seems to solidify in Fox's mind of which road where they should go down next hence this exciting uncharted territory of a film, giving a fresh experience in a universe admittedly caught in a repetitious cycle.
? Main contention ?
Without much is known about the premise other than these powered youths being tested by the power of authority, there is a mutant named Danielle Moonstar "who is a powerful telepath, with the ability to project vivid images/illusions into her opponents' minds". Whether she does it subconsciously or under duress (did you notice that green substance being injected into her?) or under her own volition, that power would materialize the other's fears i.e. the masked man, the guy on fire, the faces on the wall). The second trailer will need to clear up what the premise is and most importantly where the images come from, whether it is supernatural or indeed by her own ability and on in their minds.
~
Are they the select few that survive the experiments? The shot of the graveyard with numbers replacing the place of their names indicates there have been a lot 'patients' in the institution and whether they kept there willingly or forcefully. With Demon Bear is potentially up for the sequel, the future is set for the better, that is if the movie is being received well enough to conjure up a followup.
~
With Dark Phoenix being the next phase for the long-running X-Men franchise, it is still up in the air what would be in store for the next 'phase' of Fox's Universe. It is looking bright so far, hopefully.
- Lowlights -
It is unfortunate that Fox or the trailer studio (i.e. the studio behind Suicide Squad's trailer is different than WB) has decided to lean on the horror genre itself rather than leaning on to the mutant aspect, leaving audiences of the debut trailer to be left wondering whether this is a straight horror movie with supernatural aspects or a mutant teen film with horror spin on their abilities while in an asylum.

“Our whole pitch for this series was based on Bill Sienkiewicz run with Chris Claremont [The New Mutants vol. 1 #18–31, 35–38], so it’s very much when New Mutants became dark and surreal and more horror driven. We were incredibly inspired by the Demon Bear story which is probably the best, well-known New Mutants story. We also drew on movies like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Stephen King stuff, and even Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.
