Hellboy Whitewashing Response: Ed Skrein -> Daniel Dae Kim

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen
Lionsgate
[2018]

Project Viability =
above 70% with the clouds of previous Guillermo's adaptations & an R-rated take.

Chance of Success =
over 80% with a soft R reboot and a solid cast behind it.

a case for the most recent motion picture adaptations and the long awaited but far-fetched trilogy:
+ Positive +
cult hits by a beloved director in the pop culture, Guillermo del Toro, that devoutly bring to life the ornate and lively world of B.P.R.D. and the as colorful characters living in it with as much practical effects and perfect casting that add to the overall experience.
? Main contention ?
his now infamous involvement with various projects across the industry that don't materialize one way or another that was once met with fan's dreams and expectation has now turned to scrutiny and disappointment and his ambitious yet unrealistic $300+ millions take on the third iteration sadly would not come to life because at the end of the day he just didn't provide the profit the studio needed.
- Negative -
the total earnings unfortunately didn't reflect the popularity of his particular take (just $260 millions worldwide for the two films).
---
a case for the R-rated reboot with a new lead:
+ Positive +
a second crack at a premise that didn't garner the desirable result first time around would let them (hopefully) learn a valuable lesson from their mistakes and apply them appropriately to the best of their abilities,
~
a capable lead in David Harbour (now in the limelight after a strong performance in Stranger Things) and a relatively young career (younger compared to Ron Perlman) although his ability to lead a motion picture is still up in the air.
? Main contention ?
the non restriction of the R-rating would give them limitless potential to adapt this one-of-a-kind work of fiction although the saying of limit breeds creativity would certainly have substantial meanings if they couldn't control themselves and overstep their own potential.
- Negative -
retreading the same thread again could be a negative (although it started 13 years ago while the second was in 2008) while del Toro's critically acclaimed vision still have lasting effect in the current pop culture and aged gracefully,
~
going on the bandwagon of R-rated movies just for the sake of it wouldn't be beneficial for the franchise in the long run although Mike Mignola's original graphic novels definitely have the materials to support a more darker and mature take compared to the most recent, "to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie."
--

a case for once in a blue moon appropriate response:
+ Highlights +
It is extremely admirable for an actor in today's Hollywood climate to turn down a lucrative deal after securing the job opportunity that would be a huge plus for his career especially in the current superhero/comic book-led industry.
~
Reacting to the fan's backlash in the best way possible, he admitted that he wasn't aware of his particular character's origin in the comic and right away giving away his position willingly back to the studio for a more racially-appropriate casting which they gladly inclined with Daniel Dae Kim.
? Main contention ?
It is a given that most roles would be monopolized by Caucasian and it has been that way for an eternity but with the sudden turn of events in recent years being shepherded by the more conscious-minded audiences and more open studio executives, the effort to faithfully represent the real world demography of race has started with the right intention in mind. There are a vocal few who prefer it would stay the same but it is a positive progression than the rigid norm from before. They just need to keep the inclusion natural instead of feeling tacked on.
- Lowlights -
The skeptics would assume he's doing it purely for the good publicity it would give to his reputation instead of out of kindness of his heart and would prefer to sacrifice his work himself for a better and proper representation of race in today, looking down on the effort for equality in movies that is a long time coming and would retaliate every time their status quo is being changed for the better.
~
Diversity for the sake of diversity is not the proper approach to the problem as it's being motivated with wrong intentions behind them, being inclusive because it would serve the storytelling better instead of catering or rather pandering to the crowd.
