Last Week in Pop Culture 006, 4th Week of October 2018
Well, this is a bit late comparatively but better late than never, right? I counteract last week's entry with this culture-lite edition and I hope it suits your taste in pop culture news.
As always, please do download my podcast for an auditory companion to this recap. Just delete the space (if any), imgur is being sensitive like that. This goes one for almost an hour and a half long because I spent extra time talking about some topics that I am passionate about.
Bare in mind that the podcast has some delineation since I based it on my blog rather than this particular entry, but rest assured that I cover most of the topics included here.
01. Avatar: the Last Airbender: Agni Kai short film teaser [2019]
In the wake of the Netflix Avatar live action series news, you might be able to catch a snippet of that magical world being brought to life albeit by fans just like you and me. As short as this teaser, there is hope in them adapting it well with the appropriate costume and most importantly special effects seen in the clip. A fight between Zuko and xyz (with Katara watching by) will be a perfect piece of fandom if done perfectly and the martial art combat with the addition of fire element will make or break this venture.

02. the original Big Bird, Carol Spinney, will be leaving Sesame Street after for almost fifty years
Despite not having the show being a bigger part in my life, I know full well how much this show has influence the lives of many generations all over the world and while it will be a big loss to the Sesame Street family, he deserves a long overdue retirement after contributing to the endless pursue of kids edutainment. He hasn't actually been putting on the suit for quite awhile just because of age reasons and I'm sure he already have a replacement that he's passing the baton to. Rest well legend, you deserve it.

03. Castlevania Season Two is out on Netflix!
I'm just happy that it is finally out! A perfect watch for Halloween if you're a fan of the game series as well as violence and great fight sequences. Just eight episodes long and let's hope three will have sixteen next!

04. Elseworlds is this season's CW DC crossover event with set pictures
After getting back to form (in my humble opinion) with last year's 'Super Nazi' event, they will try to built upon it with Elseworlds, and while the universe crossing over is not something out of the ordinary for them, seeing them here in a straight line with two of the main characters seemingly changing powers or abilities or origin. Do they just swap the actors with the original personalities intact but with different powers or will they let them play around with the concept and make Stephen Amell act like Barry Allen and Grant Gustin act like Oliver Queen? And how about John Wesley Shipp back into his original(?) suit that he used to wear for his own solo Flash series?! After Mark Hamill played the Trickster again for the last two seasons, it is only right for John to put on the suit that represents the original role he plays. I can't wait to see how this will play out! Oh, we finally have an official of the big bad of the crossover; Mar-Novu!

Possible spoiler!(?) There won't be fire where there is smoke, and while all these speculations will never be confirmed officially by Marvel, I am just glad that there is even a notion of them venturing into Television to give the side characters of the MCU much needed spotlight, from Scarlet Witch and Loki to now Hawkeye. (There is another rumour of a buddy cop series. I will reveal it in next week's edition but if you're well verse of the films, you know which one this is referring to ... watch that fight scene in Civil War, the pair that's fighting the debuting Spider-Man.) Anyway, this could be Hawkeye training a new archer, with Katherine Langford that was recently revealed could be it, or there's another rumour of her being someone's daughter ... these are all pure speculations! If some turns out to be true, well consider yourself spoiled then!

We are so inundated with sex and violence with today's entertainment that we just take them for granted that we might never take into consideration what the actors and actresses have to face and endure to shoot these scenes. Starting with the second season of the Deuce, there will be an intimacy coordinator on hand to oversee the shooting scenes to cater to the actors and (even more so) the actresses, just like how we have stunt coordinators to oversee the fight scenes. They are being vulnerable physically and emotionally when shooting these scenes and if they experience some troubles during the shoots, they can't be honest to the director or the fellow actor before. Now they have a mediator that will be their voice if some needs arise. I hope other productions will follow suit to take care of these talents since it is only right when they bare their hearts and souls and bodies for our entertainment.

07. My Hero Academia live action adaptation in the works at Legendary
I commend Hollywood to keep the efforts up on finding the right formula for a successful anime movie adaptation despite the many stumbles. The one genuine honestly good one is in Edge of Tomorrow, the Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt adaptation of the manga series All You Need is Kill. In my honest opinion, I am quite enamoured with how well realised the Scarlett Johansson's Ghost in the Shell but it just devoid of original's deep philosophical storyline, and of course the whitewashing controversy. I do not think they will base it in Japan (just like how they change it with Death Note) but if they actually do, I will be over the moon if they cast all-Japanese (or maybe all-Asian) teenage cast since the characters have been drawn with Oriental features and characteristics. Giving up-and-coming talents this platform will at the least be a good publicity for them and you'll never know if it will be successful if you don't take the risk and give them a chance in the first place.

08. Pirates of the Caribbean will be rebooted by Disney with Johnny Depp confirms not to return
Whether it was his personal life affairs or just the charms of Jack Sparrow overstaying its welcome, I believe the most recent Dead Men Tell No Tales was a return to form for the franchise but I understand they want a fresh start since the earnings are not to the studio's liking. I believe a soft reboot should be the approach since casting another Captain Sparrow would not be the best because it ties into Johnny Depp's performance too much, although could Brendon Thwaites' character holds the premise up?

Netflix has been on a spree lately and this particular project makes me excited the most with one of my favourite directors being given a green light for his dream project (well, it might not be at the Mountains of Madness, but that could be next if this is successful, if I may deduce here). If you've read the press release, the amount of talents are in for this is astounding: the Jim Henson Company (the Dark Crystal), ShadowMachine (Bojack Horseman creator), co-directed with Mark Gustafson (animation director for Fantastic Mr. Fox), co-written with Patrick McHale (Over the Garden Wall scribe) and the puppets will be made by Mackinnon and Saunders who made Corpse Bride. I particularly love the medium of stopmotion and will be hoping for the movies to be more commercially successful for the art to flourish or at least keep going on. Having such a big name to use it aside from Wes Anderson with the recent Isle of Dogs will give it more credence and after seeing the Shape of Water, I can't wait to see what kind of world he will conjure up next when he is given free reign. Oh, Gris Grimly’s Pinocchio illustrations is used as the main inspiration, hence the use of the rendered concept above.
This is one for the culture.
"The 23-metre (75ft) vessel, thought to be ancient Greek, was discovered with its mast, rudders and rowing benches all present and correct just over a mile below the surface. A lack of oxygen at that depth preserved it, the researchers said.
A ship surviving intact from the classical world, lying in over 2km of water, is something I would never have believed possible,” said Professor Jon Adams, the principal investigator with the Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project (MAP), the team that made the find.
The ship is believed to have been a trading vessel of a type that researchers say has only previously been seen “on the side of ancient Greek pottery such as the ‘Siren Vase’ in the British Museum”.
That work, which dates from about the same period, depicts a similar vessel bearing Odysseus past the sirens, with the Homeric hero lashed to the mast to resist their songs."
