Mission Impossible: Fallout
Mini Non-Spoiler Review
[26th of July, 2018]
[Christopher McQuarrie - MI: Rogue Nation, PG-13, 2hrs 27min, Action, Adventure, Crime Thriller]
After coming off Ghost Protocol and then the most Rogue Nation, this is the only action franchise that is still going strong ever since its debut in the mid-90s over twenty two years ago! It is mostly due to the ageless and tireless main protagonist and lead, Tom Cruise, and his endless desire to keep pushing himself to push the envelope of what he could do himself on the silver screen. The constant rotation of directors certainly helps him to venture out of his comfort zone in order to find that specific signature feel and tone the series is now mostly known for and with the recent resurgence going stronger than ever, they keep building up this wave of blockbuster action with this most recent sixth entry.
Seeing all of those hours and weeks of backbreaking behind-the-scenes works and the pulsating trailers tease perfectly what kind of film they are walking into and they actually delivered on all fronts, and then some! Playing in the spy world with its own set of limitations can be tricky when you've gone all around the world and cover a lot of the genre tropes already considering how deep into the journey of Ethan Hunt we are in now but the partnership between McQuarrie and Cruise again bears fruit as an injection of fresh faces in the form of other bodies of governments and new antagonists with an agenda gives it an injection of new materials to play with while playing around with the myths surrounding the lead MI6 agent to provide him and the team a world and surprisingly personal stake to overcome, connecting old players of the game with a new threat that could be too much for them to handle this time around. The script is excellent and the execution backs it up tremendously.
If you're familiar with this franchise, you might see a number of throwbacks being smartly blended in with the introduction of new elements in the forms of gadgets and action sequences. Speaking of which, the action set pieces are second to none from the fight in the bathroom, the skydive off of an airplane, the car and bike chases and of course the film's signature helicopter chase! The supporting cast all are used perfectly as each of them have their own segment to shine (there is a returning cast for the previous entries ... it isn't used just as a filler but rather plays beautifully with the arc of character progression they're telling) from Simon Pegg's Benji Dunn with his technological expertise to the newest recruit in Henry Cavill's August Walker with his hand to hand prowess but nothing can compare with the invincible backbone of the whole thing (really, he broke his foot when he made that jump from one building to another, rested for just a month and came back to finish the shooting like nothing happened!) as he lead every scene he is in with endless charisma and limitless energy which are used for almost all the action scenes since he wanted to do all of them all by himself, and he actually did! From riding the bike through Paris, skydiving hundreds of times to get the shots needed and actually learn to pilot the helicopter himself for that third act bonanza! You can see his actual face, him actually doing his very best in those scenes, making us believe more that he is that capable in being the best spy in the world. All these attempts to doing more than necessary much us appreciate him more as an actor and a physical performer that we could never replicate any time soon. The movie itself went by in a breeze as the pace is never relenting with an effective rollercoaster ride of emotions (there you go, you know I can't help myself from using this term again) as we all gasps and hold our breaths with our hearts beating fast in each frame as the tension and the action pays off every time.
This year's most entertaining watch for me was Ant-Man and the Wasp in terms of wacky superhero hijinks but the most entertaining action watch certainly is Mission Impossible: Fallout and I can't wait for you all to see it yourself and be thoroughly entertained from start to finish!
P.S. Oh, the were a number of scenes being shown in the trailers that were left in the cutting board but I think it is for the better ...
P.P.S. I actually waited until the credits ended and there was nothing there, so I sacrificed my time for you to save a few minutes. Don't said I never did anything!
