Zombies has been such a mainstay in our pop culture mythology when it was started being introduced by George A. Romero and hits its proverbial high with the Walking Dead television show but since it has been reinterpreted in a short amount of time so frequentlyfor so long now, the concept has been so overplayed now that it started to lose its mystique already and having the audiences even getting sick of the notion. With that amount of baggage, I am quite surprised by how much this particular take is able to give a fresh look of this established yet tired trope.
Based on the book of the same name by author M. R. Carey, he treat the virus that turned the human into the mindless horde as a natural plant-based infection ala the Last of Us videogame. Having lived among its presence for awhile now, they have these children in captivity and monitored because of what you learned later in the film a close connection to the infestation itself, with the main protagonist as a special exception to their case studies and the only hope to cure this once and for all! It's something different for once and how they execute it is something to be admired for.
Having a zombie that have all the physical appearance of a normal human and still act like a normal kid yet will still turn into a flesh-eating monster when certain criteria are met is something new to be presented in the zombie lexicon and having a capable child actress to portray that is crucial and I believe they did have just that in Sennia Nanua. Having a capable and experienced cast to play off of certainly help as the storyline revolves around us relating to this human-slash-zombie hybrid and her understanding of her and the world's predicament and her relationship with the people she knows. The movie goes somewhere that I do not expect in the third act but the storytelling has helped me understand where it comes from and how it would have come to that in the end. It is safe to say it is unlike any other Z-based flick for better or for worse and I think you would appreciate the creativity that goes into its creation based on an established unofficial canon.
It is a surprisingly heartwarming story packed with action and violence in an emotional zombie drama! I just can't help myself ...
