Teaser Review 007 & Movie Preview 013
Ralph Breaks the Internet:
Wreck-It Ralph 2
DISNEY
[November 21st, 2018]
Trailer(s) Effectiveness = 100% for introducing the basic premise of going into the heart of the internet, seeing Ralph and Vanellope experiencing it for the first time.
It is always a bit of a standout for not adapting anything that is already established in today's franchise-minded industry and even moreso when the original was released six years ago, basing the whole premise on the medium of video games (or more accurately arcade games) and manufactured titles created from scratch and surprisingly make them much more humane and in turns quite relatable to the viewers. With Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continuing the trend of a successful game movie based on a made up game, the much awaited followup to the Disney's admittedly surprise hit will finally come after six years, now delving into the limitless ocean that is the internet. Even if we still do not know what is the main adventure both Ralph and Vanellope would go through, the notion of seeing the now much sought commodity through the eyes of the capable and proven storytellers of Phil Johnston & Rich Moore.
Chance of Success
85% with inviting invitation back into its world and now with internet in the horizon, the world is their oyster so to speak.
a case for the endearing wrecking ball:
+ Highlights +
Such a exhilarating rollercoaster ride full of laughs, thrills and personal triumphs that uses the medium of video games to the best of its abilities.
? Main contention ?
They get some inspirations from already established properties and paying tribute to them with their own unique takes, breaking down the well-trodden tropes to their bare essentials and apply humanistic traits on the characters that let us view them from a certain point of view that is fresh and fun. Even if there were many cameos from well-known icons from across the industry, they should remain as just mere cameos in fear of them overshadowing the main protagonists of the film. ? It is quite a fun experience jumping from one universe to another but whether or not that could sustain a whole movie, the decision to hunker down and focus on one singular world is a smart decision retrospectively.
- Lowlights -
There are people who just isn't satisfied with them focusing on only one world after the first act because they are attached to thrill of Ralph jumping from one game world to another i.e. alien shooter to colourful racer ... but it would be a crutch to the his character development and without it, we won't have Vanellope as a second fleshed out character.

a case for the plunge into a bottomless digital ocean:
+ Highlights +
The premise of going into the manifestation of internet and experiencing for the very first time especially through the eyes of the two main protagonists is a treat in and of itself with the peril of going online and the nature of online apps being showcased in the introductory teaser. + The virtually endless possibilities of the direction they could go, the expected wonderful gems they go with and the sudden realisation of them having to hunker down again to have a cohesive storytelling rather than just meandering around.
? Main contention ?
Still not sure what kind of adventure they would have to rival the one they had in Sugar Rush.
- Lowlights -
The vocal few will always be wishing of something that could have been, lamenting the choice of going straight to the internet rather than following chronologically the evolution of the gaming industry i.e. PC and then consoles. Since we're still in the same arcade, it won't make much sense in this setting to follow that storyline but rather a more possible outcome of the owner plugging into the internet to stay in current and attract back customers into now a wasteland of an arcade.
~
The unfortunate precedence set by the Emoji Movie of meandering in the online apps world without any viable substance to support a cohesive storyline would be a stark reminder of the worst case scenario for Disney to be aware of.
~
That bloody title though ... does it have to be that clunky? Does it have to have that now dated term? Why not, I don't know, have a little wordplay by using "Wreck" instead of "Break" since, you know, IT IS HIS TITLE?! Just "RALPH WREAKS THE INTERNET!" I don't know, just a suggestion!
