Teaser Review 002 | Fullmetal Alchemist | Valerian |
- A couple of adaptations going in two different directions -

Fullmetal AlchemistLive-Action Movie
Teaser Effectiveness = 80%
Chance of Success = 75%
Coming out of nowhere for most moviegoers, this live-action adaptation for the beloved manga and anime property would come out in just under a year as the first tease brings to life its animated counterpart wonderfully to life.
+ Highlights +
the transmutation scene changing the basic items into something else ...
the authentic European city couple with the country setting complete with train and field (above is the image of the house the brothers would live in)
teasing of the main character using his expertise in saving a damsel in distress
the transmutation circle in the room foreshadowing the event that changed the two brothers' lives
the wave of the ground coming towards the Edward as he braced himself is possibly enacted by another Alchemist
Edward's promise to his brother (that's trapped in the suit of armor) is the main plot point
ending scene with a big transmuted creature coming out of the ground coming straight towards him that's ready with his own transmuted weapon
shooting in location (i.e. Italian town of Volterra) to faithfully portrayed the European-heavy setting
the capable lead actor that has gained awards for his works despite his multi-hyphenated career
? Points of contention ?
the clearly European setting in the manga appeared to be faithfully represented in the teaser, but how the Japanese actors would look in contrast with them is still remains to be seen
the change of age for the protagonist, Edward, from 15 to 20 would affect how it is portrayed, probably less childish and more matured than he was in the manga
- Lowlights -
the mixed level of quality for Japan's homegrown adaptations of their own IPs of animes would affect how the mass audience would perceive it
I promise I'll get our bodies back.
- Synopsis -
Two alchemist brothers go on a quest for the Philosopher's Stone after an attempt to revive their dead mother goes horribly wrong.
(Original Mangaka - Hiromu Arakawa, Genre - Action Adventure, Drama, Family, Transmutation, War)

and the City of a Thousand Planets
Teaser Effectiveness = 75%
Chance of Success = 70%
A first look into an adaptation of a sci-fi fantasy comic by the mind behind the Fifth Element and the visual certainly support that comparison.
+ Highlights +
a really futuristic and alien landscape of the city ...
... and the bustling underbelly ...
... with robotic humanoids were doing their jobs (with every alien contributing in their own way to the city, this is their way as they appeared to be fusing together chips based on the designs) ...
... and this aquatic alien is also doing its part.
Going back to the protagonists, they appeared to be approaching an appraiser (of diamond?) in a believable and tactile scene ...
... as well as the fight scene with the alien wave ...
... and this tense underwater set piece ...
the military suit look proper and stylish, a good indicator of the level of costumes in the movie
? Points of contention ?
They came home from somewhere, maybe right after doing a mission.
As the movie would be dominated with aliens, the use of CGI and its believability on screen would be crucial for the audiences.
Laureline was looking into into a container (complete with laser?) rather mischievously, probably a specimen they caught and need to bring in safely ...
... although their work suits definitely have their own look.
As his constant pining for her wouldn't stop at all (notice the familiar beach background that was probably simulated) ...... and met with relentless retaliation by the object of affection ...
... and when he found the right time, it wasn't at the right place as they were interrupted with approaching wave of angry aliens with weapons.
Oh, a cameo by Rihanna.
Another setting ... is it just one too many?
- Lowlights -
the first teaser appeared to be light in actual storyline and heavy on introducing its colorful and diverse world, probably trying to ease us into the universe without being too shocked later
Cara Develingne as Laureline, Dane DeHaan as Valerian, Clive Owen as Commander Arün Filitt ...
- Synopsis -
Time-traveling agent Valerian is sent to investigate a galactic empire, along with his partner Laureline.
(Director - Luke Besson [the Fifth Element], Budget - USD $180 Millions, Genre - Action Adventure, Alien, Interplanetary, Intergalactic, Sci-Fi, Space)
