I've been meaning to review this whole series when it debuted one by one episode since I know they will differ with each other so much. Now I'm finally getting back to it and will finish watching the whole thing (was waiting for this review to do so):
Beyond the Aquilar Rift
TV-NC-17(?) | 16 min 36 sec
(science fiction)
Following up on the first episode Sonnie's Edge, here is the Engine again flexing its spellbinding muscles and creating again really lifelike human characters that's over the uncanny valley so long ago that you could mistaken some scenes in this particular short to be in real life and forget this is a fully animated series. The premise is simple and you might be able to tell where it's going right away but the plot is used to allow the director to showcase their abilities to portray human emotions unlike ever before (something that FF: Spirits Within would be better for then...) and while you can still see some imperfections if you pay closer attention, it's so far advanced already that you'll be mesmerised once you start enjoying the ride. That sex scene though... this is a mature show as advertised so viewer discretion is advised.
-------
Yeah, I wish you would go in blind just like I did when I watch it since it was a particular genre for the first half and then surprisingly transition into another in the second, with a wonderful blend in the end. I was caught by surprise but the slow and steady pace really gets me into the groove and had me going along for the ride, letting me feel it is a natural progression for the storyline. The animation is wonderful while the art direction is simply breathtaking, letting me know they're at the forefront of animation no matter the medium. It's goriness is more on the extreme side and handle a more mature themes so please proceed cautiously.

the Dump
TV-NC-17 | 10 min 34 sec
(redneck dump story-time)
I guess they're spacing this shorts knowingly of their tones, using the same pattern as the previous threes again by handling serious themes and imageries for the first two and injecting some levity with the third one, then with yogurt and now with... a mutant dog? It's a lighthearted tale but still with its own mature twist. The more rougher approach for the animation fits like a glove with the overall tone of the short. I was smiling throughout. Well...
---------
P.S. ... I wasn't smiling per say when they began to objectify the women yet again, with these three all have the same approach towards their women characters. I love how some are given means to fight back like in Good Hunting as well as Sonnie's Edge while the Witness' nudity ties into the story it is telling. Nudity for nudity's sake is cheap without any reason behind it and I want to see how the rest of the anthology is going to tackle it.

Well, that's all folks! Thank you for your time and please do come back for my future posts! :-)
