Trailer Twist: Alien Covenant, Logan, the LEGO Batman Movie & the Shallows
video 004 & trailer review 055
playing with the usual convention and tired tropes
Alien - Covenant Prologue [1st trailer review]
directed by Luke Scott, Ridley's son
Trailer Effectiveness = 100% in introducing all the crews and the one variable in the android.
-
-
a case for the prologue:
+ Positives +
akin to the Martian's Farewell video although with a more conventional approach, giving the potential viewers of what they could expect and setting up the multiple characters, a deft hand and a successor in making with the talents passing down another generation.
? Main contention ?
foreshadowing of the events going to happen in the movie with James Franco's character only seen here and not the first trailer (with his 'fever' a valid cause for concern) while the chocking scene proved why the android is there but the underlying threat to their lives is prevalent, especially in an Alien movie.
- Negatives -
it is a better promotional material if people recognize the franchise but not for those who's unfamiliar with it.
- Synopsis -
The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discover what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

(Director - Ridley Scott [Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Prometheus, the Martian], Genre - Sci-Fi, Thriller)
Lesson Learned:
A specially shot prologue would be a fitting introduction to the movie.
Logan's Hydraulic Cameo [1st trailer review]
Trailer Effectiveness = 90% with the ridiculous accent, foul language and reaction and the pièces de ré·sis·tance of the Old Man himself.
-
-
a case for the hydraulic press:
+ Positives +
going with the usual format of the channel's video at first, the introduction of adamantium ball and a certain cameo just demonstrated how weirdly unique the premise of the material is and the reactions by the guy (and the girl) is just perfect!
with the collaboration with the movie studio, the visual effects are top notch with the ball sinking into the metal surface and the claws cutting cleanly through it with the visible marks on the table.
? Main contention ?
a perfect crossover between a well-known franchise and a popular Youtube channel, one would question why it hadn't been done sooner and what other collaboration should be made next.
- Negatives -
whether the accent is intentional or not, some would find it a turn-off or offensive ... not me though!
- Synopsis -
Set in the future of 2024, Logan and Professor Charles Xavier must cope with the loss of the X-Men when a corporation lead by Nathaniel Essex is destroying the world leaving it to destruction, with Logan's healing abilities slowly fading away and Xavier's Alzheimer's forcing him to forget. Logan must defeat Nathaniel Essex with the help of a young girl named Laura Kinney, a female clone of Wolverine.

(Director James Mangold [the Wolverine], Budget $127 Million USD, Genre - Action, Adventure, Family, Sci-Fi, FOX Mutant Universe)
The best way to promote a movie sometimes is an out of the box collaboration.
Gotham Cribs
(Warner Bros.) [Now in theaters!]
Trailer Effectiveness = 100% in perfect representation of this meta representation of Batman and the concept it's parodying.
-
a case for the Cribs:
+ Positives +
using the short duration to its advantage by focusing on the Wayne Mansion and its over the top representation while the use of the Cribs concept is perfectly applicable here,
using the available property at hand and adding extra animations to show off their animation and most importantly their own cynical and hysterical take on the famed Dark Knight.
? Main contention ?
this would be a great short series consisting of each character from the movie or even others outside of the Batman universe such as the Justice League if they could keep the tone up.
- Negatives -
if people is not on board with this particular take on the franchise, well ...
it's too short, definitely leaving us wanting more.
- Synopsis -
Bruce Wayne must not only deal with the criminals of Gotham City, but also the responsibility of raising a boy he adopted. There are big changes brewing in Gotham, but if Batman (Will Arnett) wants to save the city from the Joker's (Zach Galifianakis) hostile takeover, he may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up. Maybe his superhero sidekick Robin (Michael Cera) and loyal butler Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) can show him a thing or two.

Using your own premise to your detriment.
the Shallows' Warning Call
Trailer Effectiveness = 80% with its effective voiceover coupled with choiced cuts and editing.
-
-
a case for the trailer:
+ Positives +
perfect throwback voiceover that warn the viewers of the danger in the sea and the visual pinpoint representation showing effectively the affect of a shark attack and its bloody and grim consequences...
? Main contention ?
the main character played by Blake Lively spent almost all of the runtime in her bikini although she wasn't at all oversexualized for the sake of it and it was just her state in that situation which I hope people would not misunderstand that aspect of the movie.
- Negatives -
still using the same cut technique as other trailers ...
- Synopsis -
A mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills.

(PG-13, 1hr 26min, Budget $17 M = Gross $119.1 M, Genre - Drama, Horror, Thriller)
Lesson Learned:
Setting the mood is important especially for a monster thriller.
