Trailer: Cars 3, Fate of the Furious & War for the Planet of the Apes

Cars 3

(Disney) [June 16th, 2017]
Trailer Effectiveness = 80% and going down since it's more of the same
Chance of Success = still above 80% because of its past popularity

a case for the trailer:
+ Highlights +
It's more of the same really ... but the visual certainly improves towards more a realistic and 'gritty' tone and returning to its roots(?) after the second ill-fitting premise.
? Main contention ?
Using the typical trope of a sport movie of a veteran has been coming back into the fold to rival a more advanced newcomer by going back to basic and learning the ropes again ... sounds familiar? The studio needs to add something new to the formula to make it fresh to the viewers.
- Lowlights -
It's not a full reinterpretation of the franchise just like how the first short teaser implied it would be, or it's just wishful thinking of the more realistic minded rather than the target younger demography.

a case for the franchise:
+ Highlights +
A continuation of a worldwide loved property and since it's been spearheading Disney's direction with its attractions and name recognition, expanding on its universe would be welcomed, by some.
? Main contention ?
The spin-offs like Planes shows just how this premise could be applied in other ways but by being basically just the same interior with a different skin, how much could they derive from it?
- Lowlights -
The essentially cash-grab of a sequel was well received but critically panned for its aimless direction.

- Synopsis -
Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

the Fate of the Furious
[April 14th, 2017]
Trailer Effectiveness = 100% with the trademark vehicular action and manslaughters

Chance of Success =  definitely over 90% if previous box office to be believed

-
a case for the Fate:
+ Positive +
hm ... more the Rock is always good in my book and oh, a dream team-up with Jason Statham! Charlize Theron is always a good anywhere she goes and her IT mastermind role would be interesting to see while the movie itself is more of the same which is a good and a bad thing at the same time.
? Main contention ?
after jumping the shark with a tank, now bringing up submarine?! does it even make sense in the storyline? Well, common sense has been thrown out a couple of movies ago already ...
- Negative -
more of the same which is a good and a bad thing at the same time.

a case for the franchise:
+ Highlights +
purely racing-based movies around fast cars and everything around them have a paradigm shift in recent movies with the slow and steady transition to a more blockbuster and over the top action coupled with more international adventures around the globe while the diverse crews ,
? Main contention ?
jumping the shark with the flimsiest of storyline tying them with the government facing the most lethal enemies every time with only a couple of casualties across the series certainly giving the audiences impression of the direction they're going.
- Lowlights -
now going into the eighth iteration, there's only so many things that they could do to not travel down the similar road again ...

- Synopsis -
When a mysterious woman seduces Dom into the world of crime and a betrayal of those closest to him, the crew face trials that will test them as never before.

War for the Planet of the Apes
[July 14th, 2017]
Trailer Effectiveness = 100% with the ultimate conflict between man and apes
Chance of Success =  100% by continuing the prequel trilogy(?)

a case for the trailer:
+ Highlights +
beautiful cinematography with gorgeous locations improved with lifelike realistic apes,
in between (or before) the chaos, there would be more intellectual journey and internal conflict in Caesar and Colonel with the former had Nova (the little girl) to deal with while the latter is fighting for his son/family, adding personal stakes at both sides and making it gray,
finally now a full assault and clash between the full force of the human's and the ape's armies with a full arsenal at the disposal and the biggest action sequences yet in the new anthology.
? Main contention ?
there is a shot of an ape apparently cooperating with a number of humans to confront an incoming helicopter ... is there a third faction in this war? (highly unlikely) is it hijacked by an ape to help a last resort assault on the compound that holds Caesar? (possible) would the individual behind it someone who oppose the leader's order just like Koba? (likely) would it be just someone who wants to get the job done without any care who get caught in his crosshair.

a case for the franchise:
+ Positive +
An ambitious reboot/prequel to the original's long running serious turned campy franchise that paid off tremendously with a more serious take on the premise and a sympathetic main protagonist in Caesar that audience could relate, brought to life with Andy Serkis' impeccable performance while harnessing the state of the art WETA technology (and continue to relentlessly improve upon it) to realistically portray a lifelike ape,
in Caesar, we are seeing from an ape's perspective in getting a grasp on his acquired intelligence that was forced upon him and how he used it to understand his position with the humans as well as the apes, trying to reach a peace treaty but betrayed by his own kind to the point of no return.
? Main contention ?
[Spoiler Alert!] Regarding Nova that's mentioned above, it has been confirmed it is the same character that Linda Harrison played opposite Charlton Heston in the first Planet of the Apes as well as its sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Aside from Caesar, this is the main connective tissue that connect this new iteration with the originals. [Spoiler Alert!]
