Movie News 002 Aladdin's Consistent Casting & Deadpool 2's Characters Reveal

Disney
Aladdin's
casting

With almost all of the main cast have been confirmed or at least in talks, let's do a quick rundown: Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, Will Smith as Genie, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, and Nasim Pedrad as Mara.
-
a case for the changes to the core cast:
+ Positive +
Since the original famous fable comes from the Arabic Peninsula, the visible efforts to cast actors that originated from there should be applauded with Massoud of Egyptian descent, Kenzari of Tunisian descent and Pedrad of Iran descent as the prime examples. Kudos to Disney for taking the efforts!
~
Okay, look: no one could match or replace the performance of Robin Williams that is synonymous with the lovable Genie but the next best thing to do is casting someone with talents or charisma that is at the same level as him ... and Will Smith is the perfect candidate in this situation as his charisma and comedic timings would be used to the full extent here. He is also the one big star to attract audiences to watch a movie filled with unknown stars.
? Main contention ?
A live action of Genie would be an attraction in and of itself and with a new guy at the helm, people would be interested to see how much it differs with the original, no matter how much they would hate the idea in the first place since their morbid curiosity would kick in.
~
As much as a vocal few would condemn the casting of Naomi Scott, bare in mind their months long casting calls all around the world didn't bare result that they wanted and had to go through the candidates again to find a male lead that have a great chemistry with the actress since that's the main element that would carry the film. Should they just find someone from Arabic countries just to fill the quota, or should they find someone that's capable of leading a big studio film even though she's just outside of the jurisdiction (India)? No matter the nationality, it's the talent and chemistry onscreen that count.
~
Regarding the age of the main villain, I for once think it is a good deviation from the movie trope of an evil-looking and old antagonist and while his look might resemble the animated counterpart, his youth should bring something else to the iconic role much for the better than for the worse.
~
The odd one here is the introduction of a new character in the shape of Mara that would be a handmaid-slash-friend to Jasmine ... one would deduce that she is there for the princess to bounce off of and a company to have conversation with, in favour of the expressive but rather mute Rajah. Whether or not she would only serve as a lovable goof or sidekick to her or maybe replace the pet altogether, it is still remains to be seen.
~
Speaking of which, using the Jungle Book's technology to bring the animals (the tiger as well as the monkey, Abu, and the parrot, Iago) 'back to life' would present a more current and advanced take on the lovable (and hate) characters ... but would it detract or add to the moviegoing experience?
~
What about the magic flying carpet? Doctor Strange's animated Cloak of Levitation should be what they strive for!
- Negative -
Without the late Robin to provide a little levity and laughs that was littered in the original (although Will Smith is definitely up to the task), Iago is also the signature provider of laughs and the lack of confirmation of Gilbert Gottfried to reprise his role disturbs me (wrong franchise) ... a new interpretation sure warrant a new take but keeping one of the original casts here wouldn't be so bad, right?
Nasim Pedrad as Jasmine in one of her skits in SNL.

Deadpool 2's
characters reveal

a case for the differences in visuals:
+ Positive +
The need to tone down the time traveler's costume is met here since how he looks in the comic would not translate well into real life (i.e. yellow underwear) and he looks like a disgruntled veteran that is battle weary which is the perfect foil for the titled protagonist (since they would team up together sooner or later in this movie or the upcoming X-Force film). He definitely looks the part perfectly!
~
Domino's costume surprisingly survives the dreaded transition from the drawn to live action version and she embodies the looks (the skin colour notwithstanding) in her own unique interpretation.
? Main contention ?
Are you really fighting for the characters to wear what they wore in the comics? Granted Deadpool's costume translated perfectly from page to the big screen, but even Colossus' costume has to be toned down and only Negasonic Teenage Warhead's is the most colourful in the original.
~
Considering how they look in the official released pictures, it might tell us the tone they are going for for the followup: a more grounded version without the usual spectacles synonymous with the superhero genres (that they tackled wonderfully in the original) but whether or not they would touch on the newcomer's convoluted origin, it is still remain to be seen. The purely mechanical left hand and that out of place teddy bear should give the diehard fans some clues ...
- Negative -
Okay, look: I know the name Domino have connections with how she looks especially the colour of the skin suffice to say but the change would probably be for the best. Without the short cut hair and the difference of skin tone, she still looks the part although the visual difference might be explained in the movie. Hold your horses and just wait for it, okay?
