TV News 001 Assassin's Creed Animated Show & Judge Dredd Mega-City One
& One Piece Live-Action Series Adaptation

 NETFLIX
Assassin's Creed
Animated Show
[late 2018]
Chance of Success =
over 80% after the surprising success of Castlevania with Adi Shankar's winning touch
-
a case for the surprisingly successful adaptation:
+ Positive +
faithful adaptation of the source material and able to flesh out the characters and backstory behind the game's mythology while using the platform effectively with the R-rated violence and the experimental four episode mini series.
? Main contention ?
the animation style could get some getting used to for those not exposed to this particular sub-genre.
- Negative -
too short compared to other conventional animated television shows although it is admittedly a risk that is ultimately well taken.

--

a case for the rich mythology of the assassins across time:
+ Positive +
one of the most well known game intellectual property currently and have a huge demography to take advantage with.
? Main contention ?
where would they focus this particular show on? would it be based on the first game or the upcoming 'origin' entry?
- Negative -
remember last year's motion picture live action adaptation? despite the authentic parkour and hand-to-hand action sequences, there is not a strong storyline for audiences to cling onto as the repeated jump from Abstergo to the past didn't contribute to the storytelling. Since the games always have time to flesh out the characters in the past and the present, the conversion here could have been better although this small screen medium is better suited for better conversion just like how Castlevania slowly introducing the characters and backstory without any need to rush. That is the right approach for that game and it would be perfect for Assassin's Creed as well.

Judge Dredd
Mega-City One
[2019?]

Chance of Success =
over 70% since the huge rise of cult popularity of Dredd and intention to stick to it as close as possible
-
Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley has been talking about the series and what we can expect when it eventually arrives: “Dark fantasy elements are one area that would be great to explore,” he says.
“The show will combine the macabre with the insane and the light-hearted. It’s a big place, after all, with 400 million stories to tell.”
Given the shear size of Mega-City One itself, there’s no reason why there couldn’t be literally any sort of stories told… a comedy this week, a police drama the next, and all out horror the following.
“Long-form storytelling makes showing Mega-City One and its inhabitants much easier,” Kingsley continues, “Trying to fit all of that into a two-hour movie is very hard.”
So when can we expect to see this slice of TV awesomeness?: “My best guess if that it’s at least two years away… but we’re so early in the process that things could happen a bit faster, or much more slowly.”

a case for underperformed cult hit:

+ Positive +
the 2012 Dredd movie captured the essence of the original comic book series that the 1995 campy interpretation sorely look over, from the gory action and gritty realistic tone while the Raid-like premise in a contained location allow the focus to be on the characters.
~
Oh, I just love Ma-Ma, the main antagonist by the ever capable Lena Headey! Karl Urban scowl is the perfect foil!
? Main contention ?
Aside from the pitch perfect Judge Dredd portrayal by Karl Urban (and without removing his helmet and showing his face. Like at all!), his new partner's strong psychic ability teases on.
- Negative -
it is unfortunate that it didn't get as much box office results as it deserved since only months after that it's lauded by online community.

--
“I am in discussions with them about that. I told them that if they write the material and give Dredd something to do and give him a function, I will be there. I would love to.”
~ Karl Urban ~

a case for the television show full of potential:
+ Positive +
A rich mythology to based on, fitting for an anthology series or maybe following the Judge's adventure throughout the 2000 A.D world.
? Main contention ?
since that most recent live action adaptation is what the mass audience are attracted to, it is at the project's best interest to get back as much as the crew for the film as possible to retain the same feel and look ... or maybe a fresh new take would be best. Who knows?
- Negative -
it would take time to materialize and since the reception in the cinema doesn't financially allow for a followup, it is already a miracle any continuation (or maybe a soft reboot) in the same world would take place. Let's hope for the best!

Shueisha, Inc
One Piece
live action television series
[?]
Chance of Success =
just 50% for the anime-to-movie track record and high possibility of inauthentic adaptation

“I received numerous offers for live action adaptations for One Piece. Three years ago, I finally decided to take a step forward on a live-action adaptation. After twists and turns, I met the right partner. It is a great coincidence yet pleasure that I’m able to announce the live action adaptation today on the 20th anniversary of One Piece. The first condition I presented is that ‘the live-action will be faithful to the fans who have supported One Piece for 20 years.’ I expect to hear worries from fans but more than that, I’m looking forward to hearing the excitement. Stay tuned for more news on the project!”

a case for the everlasting 20-years strong series:
+ Positive +
An imaginative twist on the genre trope of pirate with colourful characters with equally extraordinary abilities spanning across the manufactured continents while adding a lot of elements such as mermaid people, giants and world marine government. How about that?!
? Main contention ?
With the manga is still far from reaching its finish line, how much bigger could the world be? The Grand Line is just within grasp ...
- Negative -
Just like other established drawn properties, it is daunting for newcomers to start from the first issue since it is a giant now.

--
a case for the nigh impossible live action adaptation:
+ Positive +
With Guinness World Record in hand, it is undeniably one of the most recognizable IPs from the Land of the Rising Sun, which is why they would give their best to put together the best team for this the first of its kind endeavor. Oh, Cowboy Bebop's also on the card!
? Main contention ?
Since the main protagonist's main power is making his body elastic, it would be a financial burden to get the special effects just right and with his crew and other pirates also have equally visually impressive powers i.e. Zoro, Buggy and Smoker, they would need serious backing i.e. from premium streaming platforms such as Netflix to finance the VFX teams that is needed for post production works.
- Negative -
The track record of anime/manga-to-movie adaptations have been ranging from just adequate to downright atrocious and it hasn't been improving as of late (this year's Ghost in the Shell and Full Metal Alchemist are perfect examples) and that shows just how hard it is to find that perfect Iron Man formula yet as of now. If a full length motion capture couldn't do it, maybe a long series would do the trick.
