Writing Prompts 001
Sensing Another's Presence Part One

[WP] You woke up on your bed to feel your residual heat from where you laid ... and also on the other side of the bed but you know you slept alone last night.

Two genres, one mystery and one supernatural:

1.
The existence of indentation would ground the story in reality with the mystery as the through line.
2.
The untouched flat bed but with unmistakable existence of heat would go to the more supernatural route a la Stranger Things, feeling the other dimension started to seep through the line.

Waking up with a jolt, Allen saw himself in the middle of the day still on his bed, trying to keep himself awake with a succession of blinking while still laying his head on the pillow. Unsuccessfully trying to block the sunlight shining through the opened window, he rose or rather rolled over after his required eight hour sleep as he checked the clock on his smartphone to validate the time. It always amazed him how he could judge how he slept based on the aftermath of his slumber, comparing the state of the blanket and positions of the pillows, the former would always be bundled up instead of covering him in warmth while the latter would travel distances that could be matched if they were voluntarily thrown at full force. Going through the motion while trying to recover from a deep sleep, he started to fold the blanket and reposition the pillows because today he felt the urge to tidy up his bed, a foreign concept for him that his mother would never tire to remind him of. As he started to tuck in the bedding, absentmindedly his hands started to slowly move over the now vacant space where he laid just now, tracing over the extraordinary indentation on the mattress after his body remained stationary in the last few hours of his natural stupor with the residual heat consistently kept coming up to greet the tips of his fingers. Finally noticing the change in temperature, he intentionally tried to follow it from the lower part of his body to where it ended at his shoulder, definitely his right side he surmised as he tried to shake off the tingling from the resulting numbing that was still lingering.

Mystery

Before his curiosity was fully satisfied, his eyes caught a glance on the other side of the bed where he noticed the same indentation on it that mirrored his sleeping position, as if the person was facing him when he slept. His hand jolted away as his eyes involuntarily opened widely in shock and the hair at the back of his neck raised straight up, feeling in the split moment a sense of dread and complete fear for his own life. Grabbing his neck with one hand and inexplicably hugging himself with the other, he blinked his eyes repeatedly as his brain started to process what this actually meant but then realizing his currently ridiculous body position, he lowered his hands immediately and shook his head as he checked himself up and down to ensure no bodily harm. After taking a few moments regaining his composure and ensuring his physical safety, he decided to take another closer look on the other side of the bed, a king-size bed that was passed down to him when his mother replaced it with a new one. He got on the bed and hovered over the indentation, focusing more than earlier as his quick scan informed him how his extra pillows were being pushed away just enough for another person to lay in and an indented pillow just besides his own proved just that. Although definitely lower, he could still feel the body heat of that person on the surface of the bedding when he placed his palm there but when he picked his hand up, a strand of hair came as well as he picked it and dangling it in the air from one of its end. The moderate length of the hair compared to his own he left on his side couldn't help him in determining who that was but taking into consideration it was a real person who was there, he turned his attention to the pillow and while there wasn't any strand to pick up, he bravely brought it closer to his face and carefully took a sniff of it. His sense of smell was met with a familiar aroma of a fruity shampoo and based on his past knowledge of some people's ritual before going to bed that he learned from a former close acquaintance, he or she might have taken a bath last night and feeling a bit of a moisture on the tip of his nose, he believed it was a just conclusion. Putting it back down, he decided to look all over the room to see if there's anymore evidence being left behind by this apparent house invader but disappointed by the lack of it, he thought of freshening up with a splash of water in the face in the shared bathroom but when he opened the door, he saw the one and only intentional message left behind by the perpetrator in the shape of a yellow note stuck on the mirror, bearing a message:

"Sorry for the intrusion. Just need a company."

Well, that settled it then, he thought.

Part two on the second genre coming soon.
