"I don't think I can stomach anymore of this garbage."
Trailer Review 052 & Movie Preview 002
Isle of Dogs
Wes Anderson
Trailer Effectiveness =
100% for previewing the premise effectively with enough tease of what's to come in the full feature.
a case for the premise that is every inch Wes Anderson:
+ Highlights +
the palpable style and tone of Wes Anderson oozing through every inch of the frames that would not be mistaken as any other director's works, a unique premise and locale that would be masterfully fleshed out by the director as the trailer demonstrates well.
~
The stellar cast of world renowned stars as the voice over actors is giving the project much needed boost in star power as well as prestige and more recognition in the global market (although a Wes Anderson movie is already an intriguing watch all on its own).
~
Prominent use of the Japanese language across the trailer by the citizens of the Land of the Rising Sun is a good indication of how they would treat the local culture faithfully and not treat them as a joke or parodying them to the extent of mocking them openly.
~
Oh, who doesn't love dogs?!
Viewing the setup from the perspective of the dogs and that one girl, we would only hear English spoken by them maybe because they are intended to be the audience's surrogates in the film, easing us slowly and surely into this admittedly bizarre of a feature.
- Lowlights -
If you're not a fan of this type of tone and style that is prominent in his directing, this won't be for you.
-
a case for the tricky medium of stopmotion:
+ Highlights +
It is admirable for LAIKA to keep the fight alive by providing the best premium quality stopmotion products year after year but since Kubo and the Two Strings underperformed, it is beneficial to the medium for an established director to use it again for his project.
For some, this particular animation could be jarring for a select few that is not familiar with the medium and hasn't get used to it yet (if ever) and since the difficulty of the art has been a huge obstacle for many other studios to adapt and make it a more mainstream option, hence a more limited and smaller demographic compared to the current climate of Computer Generated (CG) dominance.
- Lowlights -
The abundance amount of works needed to be done to animate in this medium is expensive because of the expertise needed and by hand manipulations to execute it well and unfortunately they do not earn box office earnings as much as they deserved, even for major studio-backed movies.
