Trailer Review 028 the DefendersTeaser (Marvel) [Netflix]

The choice of soundtrack to play over the teaser was on the surface an atmospheric take on the song while its lyrics are poignantly fitting for the characters, with the first three lines echoed along the imagery signifying the unification or at least the attempt of bringing the four highly different superhuman individuals with clashing personalities and ideologies, bringing with them what they used to be, what they are now and what could brought up together.

Opening with a worn and battered surface covered fully with newspaper's headlines, with the first one, 'the Devil of Hell's Kitchen', clearly representing Daredevil, and the 'Alias Investigation' was the name of Jessica Jones' own private business in Nexflix TV Universe. Noting the contrast of colour from red to indigo for both characters as well as the latter's passions: investigation and alcohol. Being a 'property of Seagate Prison' could be a problem for Luke Cage while the question is still up on 'who Danny Rand is.' The former was an indication of the origin of the bulletproof superhero (hence the bullet hole) and the latter's symbol is very synonymous with the Iron Fist character (which has been teased in the Daredevil's first season).

The peeling of papers could also symbolizes the public perception of these vigilantes being tore away to reveal their more personal issues and identifiers, with Daredevil's "sin will find you out" cross implying the religious and sinful nature of the character and how his recklessness in his pursuit would reveal his true identity or expose himself to danger in its consequences. The nickname given to him by the public was peeled off to reveal his show's logo, revealing his heroic endeavor despite the blanketed public perception. The first line of the song came right along this sequence, to urge him to "come as you are," being the only superhero hiding behind a mask in the cinematic universe by trying to do right by the law in the morning while breaking it at night, always conflicted between the two sides.

Moving onto the second hero, or heroine, her public front which is her public investigation business, was there to hide her close connection to voyeurism by preferring to perceive others through her own lenses. The deep colour of purple signified Zebediah Killgrave, or the Purple Man, and his still lingering effects on her but having more physical effects on her though was her addiction to liquor. The next line, "as you were," was referring to her troubled and twisted past with the aforementioned villain and how she tried to move on after closing that chapter. (Nirvana was her favourite band since childhood)

"As I want you to be," as the public wants Luke Cage to be, a hero for his neighborhood, considering him doing the time for a crime he didn't commit in the Seagate Prison (the same prison with the real Mandarin in Iron Man 3 One-Shot), in which he gained his bulletproof abilities.

Being as close as friends in the comics, it's fitting to view Luke Cage and the next character, Danny Rand, "as a friend," and the question on who he really is was the same when Jessica Jones was being introduced into the fold since both of them are the more lesser known characters in the Marvel universe and even for casual audiences. The dragon logo is closely connected to the origin of his power and although the logo has been teased before, it's still unlikely for Marvel to make that leap into more supernatural and fantastical side of their lore, although the upcoming Doctor Strange is one step in the right direction.

The four of them being criticized by the only figure that can, Stick, on how they "can't save" themselves before trying to "save New York." Asides from a possible mentor for 'the Defenders,' another possible aspect of the show being reintroduced is 'the Hand,' heavily hinted by the shape of a hand looming over the NY skyline. Since the second and third season of Jessica Jones and Daredevil won't come until 2018, the lingering questions regarding the organization could be answered in this team-up. The "DEFEND" collage was being scrapped together with the alphabets from each of the show's logos excluding one (the first 'E'), possibly a new or returning (Punisher?) character that would join the fight later down the series.

Taking inspiration from the opening title sequence from the movie, Seven, this whole teaser could be from the perspective of another character who was urging or taunting these vigilantes to defend the city from the force gripping the life out of them by pushing on their pride.
