Trailer Review 024 Doctor Strange 2nd Trailer

Doctor Strange
[110416] Chance of Success =  85%

- the trailer started by emphasizing the importance of Doctor Stephen Strange's hands in his career with years of practice perfecting his arts -

his colleague, Christine Palmer, was teased in the previous trailer by rushing to help him after the fated car crash and now staying by his side to break the news to him of his predicament but her further role in the movie is still under wraps (Night Nurse?) -

this in turns forced him to turn to the Ancient One whom expose him through a barrier between two realities -

- the new Marvel Studios logo symbolizes the new direction it is going for its cinematic universe while teasing the tone of this movie with the kaleidoscopic tribute to the original artist, Steve Ditko's particular style -

- the mysterious (Ancient One or the evil henchman?) hooded figure in the yellow robe used his/her mastery of mystic arts to alter the surrounding reality, posing as a possible breath of fresh air in the villain department of superhero movies while the shifting of the architecture and perspective was like looking through the kaleidoscopic filter -

- the swirling fire ring served its wielder (and passenger) as a teleport, bringing both her and Strange to the Himalayas, the original's place they trained together in the origin story and another change of cannon is the inclusion of fellow apprentices instead of the original's more isolated experience -

- with his interest finally peaked, Stephen's inquiry on the ways to master the art was met with the same method he used to be a doctor in the first place: "study and practice, years of it," accompanied by the possibly the first look at the Book of the Vishanti* -

- the first look of the magic he conjured from the book was the mystical green energy emanating from the hand with his signature symbol preceding the otherworldly crystalline barrier -

- Baron Mordo and Wong served as supporting characters that were changed and updated significantly from their original roles as the main nemesis and just a racist caricature to giving the Doctor more helping hands in his journey -

- his iconic red cape in his mythology, the magic artifact Cloak of Levitation, was under lock and key during his training as his teachers contemplating whether he's ready for it or not -

- the main villain, Kaecilius, was originally lead henchman of Baron Mordo but now was the former student of the Ancient One who had gone rogue, mentioned strongly by Wong to Strange as a stronger man who have lost his way  -

- with him apparently apprehended in chains, the make-up effects supported his arrogant claim despite his circumstance, the physical manifestation of the magic symbolizes his opened and exposed eyes of something more insidious in nature -

- the magic was affecting the city except its occupants, curving into a spiral while invoking a visual similar of Inception but with different execution, trying to pay another homage as well as trying to ease the general audiences into this mind bender of a movie with a familiar visual from another equally trippy movie -

- the similar crackling magic from the previous trailer seen here being pulled off with tremendous physical efforts which can be seen for a number of other spells as well -

- watched by Baron Mordo, the main protagonist and antagonist were in a scuffle while the city magically coming back to its original state as the former believably trying to undo the latter's actions -

- Doctor Strange and his ally looking over the aftermath of Kaecilius' plan,

* - In the comics, this book is an indestructible guide to defensive 'white magic,' with each spell calling upon the powers of the three spirits collectively known as the Vishanti

+ Highlights: the unique soundtrack, the walk through the barrier, kaleidoscopic studio's card, the teleporting to the Himalayas, the first spell from the book, the charismaric villain, the spiralling of the world, the physically-straining conjuring process, the superhero landing twist, the self-fastening cape, the fully transformed world, shamballa
- Lowlights: the now obligatory body shot of the hero but acceptable considering the sexism the opposite sex have and still faced in the industry

~ Another origin story that is necessary of an established career man who lost his abilities in an accident, trying to gain it back with his monetary assets but when all things fail, he needs to fix his ways and journey into a whole new world as an audience surrogate for himself, the audiences and the Marvel Cinematic Universe
~ Opening up the door into the magical side for the anthology and the released promotional pictures tease the possibility of the title character's transformation and the following mystic powers and trippy visuals that looks similar to the recent mind trip movie but actually originated from the original creator and artist Steve Ditko
~ Visually mind-bending in the recent trailer with the director's expertise in horror thriller shines through as well as the quick glimpse of the cast teases their relationship with each other and how they perform in the movie, although a particular casting would be argued as 'whitewashing' despite her superior acting abilities
