Movie & TV Development News:
Dune's Oscar Winner Writer, Joe Manganiello's D&D Script & Preacher team for Robert Kirkman's Invincible

Award-Winning Writer for Dune reboot
LEGENDARY
[2019?]
Chance of Success =
around 80% since the original material is that hard to adapt despite the solid team behind it
-
a case for the seasoned Oscar winner, Eric Roth:
+ Positive +
an established veteran screen writer with years of experience under his belt and acknowledgement in the field with plenty of nominations as evidence, providing more reasons to believe he have the ability to adapt such a tricky material,
? Main contention ?
not having consistent works on movies in recent times (since he's busy in the television with the House of Cards) and inexperience in big-budgeted studio project especially in the current climate could be a reason for him to tread carefully here,
- Negative -
-
--
a case for the franchise impossible to adapt:

+ Positive +
an epic science fiction novel that are groundbreaking and progressive even to this day, it is in the same veins as the big scope and scale of the Lord of the Rings and political affair of Game of Thrones.
? Main contention ?
considered to be unarguably a literary masterpiece that perfectly illustrated in the expertly masterful writing ... but could the movie reinterpretation even measure up to its level?
by reaching a deal with the Herbert estate for both film and TV rights, a successful debut with an establishing motion picture could set an HBO series a la Westworld in this rich universe!
- Negative -
it would always be compared to the original source material and purists would never be satisfied with the concept of adaptation and what have to be changed and altered to fit the visual medium.

---
a case for the best man for the job:
+ Positive +
an established director with a burgeoning track record full with motion pictures from all across the genres in the industry and in recent times have found his niche in his subtle yet distinctive own look and style and starting to move into more genre-specific films,
~
had his first venture into the science fiction with a mind trip of time travel journey in Arrival last year and with acceptable earning for such a unique premise, it bodes well for him when he tackle this well-known intellectual property,
~
a proven visual expertise that could be seen in Sicario and Arrival as the former let him effectively shown the vastness of the desert in New Mexico and its surprising beauty (which would be the most essential ability to be applied in Dune and the sneak peek of his work in Blade Runner 2049 seen below is definitely in the similar tone) while the latter (although using the surrounding mountain as a beautiful backdrop) choose to focus on the emotional journey of the main protagonist which was the smart choice retrospectively.
? Main contention ?
with existing fan base, just like for his Blade Runner followup, its box office result and critical reviews would be the clearest indication of how his own take on Dune would be and how well could he play in someone else's established universe.

Joe Manganiello's Dungeons and Dragons Script
[?]
Chance of Success =
TBD just because the uncertainty of this particular project
-
a case for his surprising geeky side:

+ Positive +
self-proclaimed pen-and-paper enthusiast from when he's young but just like Vin Diesel before, when he's invited to play with the more experienced and hardcore players, he didn't look out of sorts at all and shown his passion and interest in the campaign they're in.
? Main contention ?
everyone have their own hobby, but it doesn't automatically make you a good writer but it doesn't necessarily mean he won't be a good writer himself either since there is no proof of his expertise in that particular field.
- Negative -
he would be a charming lead but as evident in Vin Diesel's own the Last Witch Hunter, no matter how passionate you were in that genre, it doesn't matter at all if it didn't came across on the silver screen and the surrounding movie was not a good representation.
--
a case for the beloved but misrepresented genre:
+ Positive +
the mythology and characters are rich enough to warrant its long-lasting popularity in the geek culture lexicon for almost half a century which is why there would be people to constantly try to adapt it.
? Main contention ?
Preceding the genre itself and serve as the main inspiration, the excellence of the Lord of the Rings universe resulted by the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien and was brought to life by the deft hands of Peter Jackson and remains as a shining star everyone strive for.
- Negative -
it's a world full of magic and fantasy that's heavily depending on the theater of the mind that's boundless and restricted only by their own imagination and the transition from the pages to live action have been impossible to achieve so far with the aforementioned Vin Diesel outing and Uwe Boll's horrible D&D/game adaptations as the biggest commercial failures?.

amc's Preacher team for Robert Kirkman's Invincible
[2019?]

Chance of Success =
over 90% with their surprising success with Preacher and the bloodily unique Kirkman's IP
-
a case for the surprising success:

+ Positive +
unfiltered and definitely NSFW original premise that's heavily revolved around the concept of God and faith as the cable network, amc, were willing to take the risk and let the duo of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to take the challenge and adapt it and the resulted first season was a resounding success as their risky decision to go off the book and set up and build the weird world and eclectic characters first from the ground up proven to be a risk well taken.
? Main contention ?
readers of the graphic novels would be disappointed not to see a direct adaptation from its first issue but it was retrospectively a smart planning for the future and would work to the benefit of the series in the long run as the viewers would be let into the unique universe slowly but surely as the second season would use it as a stepping stone to step on the gas and crank up the weird and the grand.
- Negative -
-

--
a case for an equally bloody good fun:
 + Positive +
in line with the current emergence of adept adaptations in the form of quality and entertaining superhero television shows across almost every leading network i.e. CW and Netflix with collaborations with leading IP owners i.e. Marvel and DC, this particular premise is more R-rated (as per tradition of Robert Kirkman's works) and bloody than others and wouldn't shy away from more explicit materials.
? Main contention ?
with the premise of superhero genes being passed down from generation to generation, the second generations would be the focal point as the children of superheroes and supervillains in their teens deal with it in their own ways and the main protagonist is the child of a famous superhero had to deal with school life as well as his own powers coming through during puberty, trying to live up to the legacy of his father.
- Negative -
the fear of superhero oversaturation is real and could be felt today and although the comic book lovers would enjoy this golden age of superhero, the more casual fans could feel it was an avalanche that's never stopping if they couldn't get into any of the properties.
