Picture Review 005 Power Rangers and their Zords

Power Rangers
and their Zords
(Saban)
Emerging March 24, 2017

Possible reveal (of first trailer) at NYCC 2016 on October 8

The trend of reboots finally hitting the studio of Saban with a modern Hollywood reinterpretation of the classically campy franchise as a high budgeted studio motion feature. No matter what you think of the specific directions they are going with the alien-oriented updates of the main villain, Rita Repulsa and the Power Rangers themselves, the casting of world-renowned actors definitely showing their intents to go all the way and now the imminent changes to the classic designs of the Zords.

These series of posters have the Rangers themselves on top of each respective Zord or robot that would combine into the now trademark humanoid Megazord. This new iteration saw firstly the updated Mastodon Zord of the Black Ranger/ Zack Taylor (Ludi Lin), with him possibly standing on top of the trunk as the tusks looked like two massive guns. This is emphasizing the more action-oriented tone the movie is going for with them possibly even engaging the giant monsters by themselves first in their own Zord well before the final morphing into the ultimate form.

Regarding the tag line, "Go Go," it is using the famous line in their theme song and also spoken by them when transforming, paying tribute to the original's more upbeat and zany tones of the franchise since it was appropriated with permission from the Japanese Super Sentai series. It is safe to say that they are going on a more realistic and 'gritty' take on the premise but at least they try to please the fans of the originals.

As the Black Ranger's stance showed his readiness to jump into action and bear arms with the others, this particular Blue Ranger/Billy Cranston (RJ Cyler) who was practically leaning against his triceratop 'ride,' possibly taking more lightly his role in the squad and his responsibility to protect the world against exterior force. Him copying the pose of Iron Man in Iron Man 2 could potentially represent his own similar laidback approach to his superhero duties. Regarding the design, it looked to be a perfect blend of muted colours and the modern and tech-minded approach, with the more ambiguous dinosaur designs of the combat-ready robots, punctuated with the rather sharp horns protruding of the 'head.'

Kimberly Hart/ Pink Ranger (Naomi Scott) appeared to be sitting on the shoulder of her Pterodactyl that still apparently kept the giant bird's shape and colour, with the full unveiling of the entire Zords could be kept in secret as close to the release date as possible since the CGI of the robots would take months to be finalized especially when they're in motion in the finished product. Despite the reservation of the change in their designs, these posters are a great promotional images with only teases of the Zords' shapes as the background sky showed the giant scale of the mechas (while having the tint of their respective colour).

The second female Ranger, Trini/Yellow (Becky G.), seen here standing on top one of the leg of the Sabertooth Zord while the leader, Red Ranger/Jason Lee Scott (Dacre Montgomery), is sitting just at the base of his Tyrannosaurus Rex's tail. Both of these images despite the muted nature of the posters showed how nice the contrast between the primary colors and the chromes, while the intricate design of body and tail of the latter only teasing how drastically different every Zord would actually look in the end.
