Stay or go?

 User-Controlled 001e [pen-to-paper] <idea> the Surprise [imgur]

O... oh, it's up to the narrator now. This is new, something novel that is a foreign territory for him. He appreciates the opportunity and will not take the chance lightly. He knows he shows his hands a little earlier but he wants to make it clear that he won't let his personal feelings get the better of him. Now, what is the best outcome for this predicament? I know what you're thinking, says the narrator but he assures that he just want their journey to continue without a hitch. It would be anticlimactic for their adventure to prematurely end just like that, with a futile jump off a cliff. It would make for a nice freeze frame for sure but an exercise of futility nonetheless. Getting back to the risk-taker, the natural slope of the hill could shows them only so far, the slight incline right at the end masking what is lurking beneath. Since they are already gliding down the grass though, there isn't any more time to overthink it. While this is another first time experience for them, they know exactly what to do at the exact time. Where to put your hands to find that perfect balance and how much to lean back or squat down. It comes to them naturally, as if it's in their very nature. Whether having the shield or having all that book knowledge, it feels right to them to surf through the nature just like this. All these thoughts come flooding through as they begin to pick up speed at a more faster pace and the ledge is coming faster as faster. Bracing for what would be waiting on the other side, they feel the need to squat down as far as they can and grab each side of the shield, taking quick short breaths before a big gulping one that they hold inside as they take to the air... Instinctively closing their eyes, our amateur daredevil could only hold on for dear life, gripping the sides and white-knuckling through the sweats of fear, trying to gulp down the lump in their throat as the sensation of weightlessness feels so ethereal and morbid all at the same time. For a moment of eternity, they are in the air and when they finally hit the ground on the other side, their sincere hope for the best feels like it comes to fruition, feeling the momentum of the aforementioned jump carrying him down the remaining hillside. They would not tempt fate more than they already did, still keeping the eyelids close together and still straining their muscles to brace for any possible incoming impact. It would help to be able to see what would be coming towards you but it's the only strategy that they could muster at the moment. Finally, their impromptu thrill ride gradually comes to a halt and after staying still for extra caution, they slowly open their eyes and sit up on the makeshift surfing board. Finding the action hard to execute especially after clenching up their body for minutes just earlier, they stumble off the shield and pick it up while turning back to see where he had been and what he had traveled down, with eyes closed to boot. With both hands covered with grass and the sun that was on their back then is now beaming straight down, they could only breathe a huge sigh of relief. The only thought that comes to mind now is whether or not to make camp right now and stay for the night or try to find any tavern or lodging along the journey forward.
