 - Synopsis -
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.

"A return to form by the famed director by successfully adapting the unnerving source material with deft hands albeit with a few alterations yet it would not diminish the high production value and the tour de force performance of the main lead."

+/- Exceptional work on adapting the bestselling novel almost to perfection, adapting a first person perspective novel into a conventional movie with the accompanying toning down of the science parts and the changes to the ending, definitely a divisive move for the moviegoers and readers
A return to form for the veteran filmmaker with excellent pacing and smart cinematography, bringing to life the alien world of planet Mars while balancing the solitary journey with much needed humor and other human's participation
Outstanding performance by the leading male that played against himself most of the screen time, acting out his own Castaway moment by pulling off some tense and emotional moments while providing some humor as well, perfectly encapsulating his charming and strong persona
+/- The excellent lead is being supported by the excellent and diverse supporting cast that plays their roles wonderfully but some of their roles are being cut down to merely cameos
+/- Representation of real life science and theories that is accurate to a point but majority of them were cut from the original material, while the high production values make the make believe expedition all the more believable
